Everyone knows that opposites attract. Yet, we still find it shocking when two people that appear so different are somehow attracted to one other. Sometimes there’s an age gap. Other times the personalities are totally at odds. More often than not, these couples have hot but short-lived relationships. Do you remember these unlikely celebrity couples?
Cher & Tom Cruise
You may remember that pop star Cher dated actor Tom Cruise in the mid-1980s. The singer opened up about their relationship in 2013 on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. She was asked to rank her top lovers and said Cruise “was in the top five.” She added, “It’s not a long list, just a good list.” When asked about Cruise, she described him as a “great, lovable guy,” and admitted that their relationship had been “hot and heavy” all those years ago. She added, “It could have been a great big romance, because I was crazy for him.”
Moby & Natalie Portman
Electro dance DJ Moby dated actress Natalie Portman for a brief time in 2001. He told Spin of their coupling: “I guess in some people’s eyes, [nerds] might be mildly sexy—and, as a nerd, I’m certainly happy to enjoy some of the effects of that. But as far as the very brief affair that I had with Natalie, it’s made me a target of a lot of nerd wrath. You don’t date Luke Skywalker’s mom and not have them hate your guts.” Portman married French ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied in 2012. They have two children. It was recently rumored that Moby got engaged to his girlfriend.
Andrew Aggasi & Barbra Streisand
Singer Barbra Streisand dated tennis player Andre Agassi for one year, and they broke up in 1993. Agassi wrote in his autobiography: “We agree that we’re good for each other, and so what if she’s 28 years older? We’re sympatico, and the public outcry only adds spice to our connection. It makes our friendship feel forbidden, taboo – another piece of my overall rebellion. Dating Barbra Streisand is like wearing Hot Lava.” He eventually married and divorced Brooke Shields. His current wife is tennis star Steffi Graf, and they have two children. Barbra Streisand is now married to James Brolin. Her first husband was actor Elliott Gould.

In 2015, they traveled together to Bora Bora to celebrate Ava’s academic achievements. Sambora is currently dating guitarist Orianthi. Locklear dated plastic surgeon Marc Mani and then her former Melrose Place co-star Jack Wagner. The pair got engaged in 2011 but split three months later.

Diaz gushed on Instagram in 2016: “One of my favorite things about being married is how much pride I take in my husband. He makes me proud every day. One day it might be how generous and giving, another how gentle and thoughtful. Or when he is fiercely protective of the people he loves and cares about. Every single day I am so incredibly proud of his integrity as a human being.” She previously told Andy Cohen: “Nothing matters now that I have my husband.”
Alanis Morissette & Ryan Reynolds
Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and Canadian singer Alanis Morrissette were together for five years (and engaged for two) before splitting up in 2007. In her 2008 album Flavors of Entanglement, Morrissette channeled her heartbreak, telling the Orange County Register: “One of the main themes of this record is this recovery, rising up from the ashes so to speak. So it’s sort of an unraveling of my own personal life, hitting my own rock bottom and rising up. …” Reynolds went on to marry actress Scarlett Johansson in 2008. They divorced in 2011. Actress Brooke Shields first met Michael Jackson when she was 13 years old. They were very close, and he was her date at Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding. She wrote in her memoir There Was a Little Girl, “Of course we loved each other, but nothing happened romantically. I would be like, ‘Oh please, knock it off.’ He was like this kid who would ask you [about dating and romance]. Nobody was telling him and nurturing this stuff and I think he was terrified. He was terrified and sort of juvenile. I think there was an arrested development.” She added, “He wanted us to never not be with each other.”
Lady Gaga & Taylor Kinney
Pop star Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney were in a relationship for five years before calling off their engagement in July 2016. During an interview on CBS Sunday Morning in March 2017, the singer noted: “I think women love very hard. We love men. We just love with everything we have. And sometimes I don’t know that that love is met with the type of dignity that we wish it would be met with. You know, we’re not trying to make you less of a man. We just want you to love us as deeply and as wholesomely and as fully as we love you.”
