Leopold II of Denmark Inspired Heart of Darkness

Leopold II of Denmark and his treachery in the Congo inspired one of the most famous pieces of literature of all time. Joseph Conrad wrote his iconic novel Heart of Darkness based on his own experience as a steamer captain on the Congo.
In the novel, he famously criticized the rule of Leopold and the atrocities the native people faced. Many years later, Francis Ford Coppola was inspired by Heart of Darkness and made his film Apocalypse Now about the book only instead of being set in the Congo he moved it to Vietnam.
