Belgium isn’t known for its account of atrocities, even though it should be. Leopold was the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State which was authorized by colonial nations of Europe with the intention of aiding the people of the Congo. However, he completely ignored this and instead used the opportunity to gain monetarily through the collection of ivory and various construction ventures.

The Congolese people were subject to massive atrocities at the hands of the Belgians including mutilations. Leopold was responsible for the murder of over 50 percent of the Congo’s entire population. He was also known for his forced practices of cannibalism on his victims and prior to his colonization, all of the African countries were run by themselves.
