The Life And Controversies Of Dr. Oz

Sued For Factually Deficient Claims

In a May 2016 episode of The Doctor Oz Show, Oz did a segment called “Is Your Olive Oil Fake?” In the segment, Oz declared that “A shocking 80% of the extra virgin olive oil that you buy in your everyday supermarket isn’t the real deal.” He then had a taste test with both an expert olive oil taster and an audience member who both claimed that one type was fake. However, taste is not something that can determine the purity of olive oil so The North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA) sued Dr. Oz for false attacks. There were numerous other issues with the segment, such as where Oz got the 80% number and his tips for buying pure olive oil.
