Then, in 2015, ten physicians with specialties ranging from cancer research to psychiatry wrote a letter to Columbia University for Dr. Oz to be let go from his position at the university. The group accused him of “manifesting an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal and financial gain”. They argued that Oz has “disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine, as well as baseless and relentless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops”. Yet, Columbia stood by Oz and released a statement saying that “Columbia is committed to the principle of academic freedom and to upholding faculty members’ freedom of expression for statements they make in public discussion”.
