As if Oz’s experience at the Senate panel wasn’t enough, in December 2014, the British Medical Journal released a study about the accuracy of Dr. Oz’s claims and recommendations. The BMJ examined over 400 medical health recommendations from 40 episodes of his show and found that only 46% of his claims were supported by acceptable scientific research, 15% of his claims were contradicting to mainstream science, while the remainder was essentially unsupported by research. The authors continued to write that “Anyone who followed the advice provided would be doing so on a basis of trust in the host or guest rather than through a balanced explanation of benefits, harms, and costs”.
