Even the greatest of stars must age just like us normal folk. While most of us simply want to age gracefully, most celebrities are a different breed altogether. Plastic surgery, Botox, the craziest of diets… you name it. Most of these people will do anything to maintain that youthful appearance. But sometimes that just doesn’t work out. Here are some cases in point.
Mickey Rourke, Star Hunk Then
“Hunk” should be used only for those who have “it.” The right looks the right smarts, talent, etc. Star power. Mickey Rourke in the 1990s had “it.” All the best parts, critical acclaim, and everything in between. Then booze and a career as a boxer took over his life and the rest is history.
Mickey Rourke, Plastic Surgery Gone Haywire
Mickey became a professional boxer in 1991 and retired in 1995. His looks paid the price. Plastic surgery, I’m guessing, wasn’t successful for this star. I do know, if he gave me even five dollars, I’d track down every surgeon he used and make them pay for what they did to him. Really.
Cybill Shepherd Then
Former Miss Teen Memphis and a supermodel in her own right, Cybill has had a fantastic career in television and movies. I would say that “Moonlighting” was probably her greatest hit for the star so far. She also starred in her own series called “Cybill,” and won a Golden Globe for the comedy show.
Cybill Shepherd Later
Fact: Cybill got her first name from her grandfather “Cy,” and her Father, “Bill.” How unique is that for a woman, much less a man? You’d be hard-pressed to do a double-take these days, but she certainly looks as happy as she’s ever been. And not too many people can claim they “did the nasty” with Elvis Presley!
Kathleen Turner Then
Kathleen was quite the busy (and beautiful) star in the eighties and nineties making films like The Man with Two Brains (1983), Romancing the Stone (1984), The Jewel of the Nile (1985), Prizzi’s Honor (1985), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), The War of the Roses (1989), and Serial Mom (1994). Her talent gave her the edge in getting great movie roles.
Kathleen Turner Later
When Kathleen was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 1992, the illness forced her to give up filming movies, as the pain was simply too much for her to bear. Her prescribed medications made her bloat and gain weight, making her nearly unrecognizable from her former self. She simply tells everyone to “get over it”
Kelly is probably most famous for her role in the film Weird Science. She was famous way before that film, though. She was what people would call a supermodel. She appeared in and on the cover of hundreds of magazines and represented various designers for their campaigns. She started modeling at the age of sixteen.
Kelly LeBrock Later
The stars’ very bitter divorce from Steven Seagal, temporary drug addiction, and a personal fight with self-hatred turned this once stunning beauty and star into a recluse for years. She even managed to get a DUI in 2013. But from what I’ve read, she’s doing much better now thanks to her fighter’s spirit.
What do you get when you combine nearly unnatural beauty with…well, even more, unnatural beauty and talent? Linda Evans, that’s what. Linda’s had a very long acting career, from 1965’s Audra Barkley in Big Valley to Krystle Carrington of “Dynasty” fame, probably her best-known television role.
Linda Evans Later
No, Linda doesn’t much like herself from the eighties or probably even the nineties. There’s a reason for that. The star now admits that she has overdone the surgeries that she has undergone and is sorry that some of the procedures were completed. She has done interviews with both Oprah and Diane Sawyer about her plastic surgery gone wrong; the large lips, the over-filled cheeks, etc. While these lips may look great on a young person, they look unnatural on a person of her age.
Actor and heartthrob Bruce Willis has had a career that most actors would absolutely die for. From action movies to comedy or television, he seems to have it all. And back in the day, he even had hair! He was great playing a detective on “Moonlighting” opposite Cybill Sheppard, and I’m sure I don’t have to mention the Die Hard series of movies to anyone.
Bruce Willis Later
True, he doesn’t really look anything like he used to but that hasn’t slowed down his career any. Stars like Bruce are more concerned with great scripts than looks. I guess there’s something about the “serial killer” look that Hollywood seems to love when casting people for films. It must be working: Bruce’s movies have made over two and a half billion dollars alone.
Bruce was once one of the greatest stars on earth. A retired Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete, Jenner was given the unofficial title of “world’s greatest athlete.” With that stature, Jenner subsequently established a career in television, film, writing, auto racing, business and as a Playgirl cover model. And don’t forget that iconic Wheaties cereal box cover! Jenner really had it all.
In a “20/20” interview with Diane Sawyer in April 2015, Jenner came out as a trans woman, saying that she had dealt with gender dysphoria since her youth and that: “for all intents and purposes, I’m a woman.” Say what you want, but Caitlyn got it right with the plastic surgery. She is unrecognizable from the former Bruce.
For someone who never had any acting ambitions, Edward certainly had the right casting for the movies he’s been in. The star normally seemed to play the dark, brooding character who comes from a dysfunctional family, such as the Terminator series or American History X. The handsome young man really made an impact on the Hollywood landscape.
Edward Furlong Later
Unrecognizable from his former self, Furlong said in December 2006 that from 22 to 26 he was “on and off” hard drugs, adding that, “I was a heroin and cocaine addict. It was really scary.” In the same interview, he said, “I don’t even think about [partying] anymore. It seems lonely now: running and clubbing and doing coke. I have nightmares about doing hard drugs. I’ll wake up and I’m like, ‘Did I relapse?'”
Sally was always hot! The naturally blonde and blue-eyed pretty girl most famous for her role on “All In The Family” has enjoyed a very long career in television and stage. She even turned down an offer of one million dollars to pose nude for Playboy magazine in the early 1970s.
Sally Struthers Later
Only Sally knows the real reason(s) regarding her dramatic weight gain over the years. All we know is that she’s unrecognizable from the old days. She seems happy from most photos that I see her in. She was arrested for DUI a few years ago, but has stayed out of serious trouble nearly all her life. If she’s happy, then so are we.
Chuck has always played the tough guy. Why? Because he can! And don’t you forget that. The martial artist played in a number of films and is best known for his starring role in “Walker, Texas Ranger” from 1993 to 2001. He’s still so popular that there are all sorts of internet sites about him and his beard.
Chuck Norris Later
Well, Chuck is still tough looking, even though he looks more like a Care Bear with chronic gas problems. Every once in a decade, the beard comes off the star (most likely by a laser beamed from a satellite somewhere in space). Even though we wouldn’t recognize him now from his earlier days, Chuck is still The Man!
Daisy Duke was the peak of Catherine Bach’s career, and one look at the pic will tell you that she didn’t need anything else to bolster her career. If you are hot enough that all cutoff jeans on a woman are now called “Daisy Dukes,” even some thirty years later, then you know you’ve made your statement to the world and become a star.
Catherine Bach Later
We have to say, we wouldn’t notice if I walked past Catherine Bach. Not because she’s unattractive or anything, it’s just that we find her unrecognizable as the girl from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” But hey, for sixty-two years old we think she looks great. Plus she’s still in demand playing in several feature films and as a recurring character on “The Young and The Restless.”
John Travolta was one fine piece of man back in the day. He really gave his all to any part he played, whether it be television’s “Welcome Back Kotter” or dancer supreme in Saturday Night Fever – which allowed him to become one of the greatest stars ever. And I totally forgot about Grease! But his looks, according to the girls, is what drove people to the Friday night movies.
John Travolta Later
Hmm…I’m just not sure where to start. Yes, he’s one of the richest celebrities in the world. Yes, he flies his own 747. He’s a universally known star. But that creepy appearance and smile of his would probably make us wet ourselves if he came around a corner unexpectedly. And where are his eyes? He’s unrecognizable to us from his youthful days.
New York socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein is a rare case in which someone becomes famous after having their plastic surgery procedures. In fact, it’s difficult to find a photo of her prior to her many surgeries. Wildenstein was already somewhat known for her extravagant New York lifestyle, claiming her telephone bill alone came to $60,000, with food and wine costs adding up to $547,000…a year. If you think that’s shocking though, just wait till you see what she looks like today….
Jocelyn Wildenstein Today
That’s what we call an extreme look! So what went into this transformation? It’s rumored that Wildenstein’s many plastic surgery procedures were inspired by her desire to look more “cat like” since her husband had a fondness for big cats, like lions and tigers. Well that’s one way to keep a marriage alive! Sadly, it didn’t work though, as the pair went through a scandalous divorce in the 1990’s, said to have been kicked off when Jocelyn walked in on her husband in bed with a 19 year old Russian model. Whoops!
Young Johnny Depp is the stuff of which little girl’s dreams are made from. Perfect looks. Perfect attitude. Hell, he even had perfect hair. The very talented actor caused quite a storm in his younger days with a hit television series and a massive movie presence on films like Crybaby and Edward Scissorhands.
Johnny Depp Later
Depp is still one of the most massively popular stars in the world, legal troubles notwithstanding. He’s singlehandedly made pirates popular. But we’ll tell you if we were, say ten years old, and you showed us a pic of him when he was young, he’d be unrecognizable. Years of hard partying, booze, drugs, etc, have destroyed his naturally good looks. Now he just looks sad.
This good-looking British actor was always the rebel. He was expelled from the Central School of Speech and Drama in London for clashing with his teachers and instead apprenticed himself at the avant-garde Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre in Scotland, performing in such productions as “Don Juan” and “Heartbreak House.” He went on to play in several movies, including the Shrek series.
Rupert Everett Later
Now Rupert looks more like Abraham Lincoln than the heartthrob he formerly was. He’s still in demand playing in a huge variety of films including Loose Women and this year’s The Musketeers. We just can’t get over the fact that he looks so different from his younger days. But we all will look different years from now.
Axl Rose Then
Guns N’ Roses lead singer Axl has had a very successful career so far. And what a voice! Due to his powerful and wide vocal range and energetic live performances, Rose has been named one of the greatest singers of all time by various media outlets, including Rolling Stone and NME. The band’s videos still receive wide rotation on video channels and their songs are now legendary.
Axl Rose Later
He’s still very energetic (he recently hurt his leg on stage), but Axl is truly unrecognizable from his earlier days. Decades of the good life, partying, and drugs have ruined the lead singer’s once great looks. Now he just gives the appearance of a star wanting to go to McDonalds or an all you can eat buffet rather than playing concerts these days.
Lara Flynn Boyle Then
I still remember the episode of “Twin Peaks” when Lara walked up to the camera, put a whole cherry including the stem in her mouth, and in a few seconds popped the cherry out, and the stem was in a knot. That single act launched the beauty into superstardom. Lara’s played in some great films like Poltergeist III and Wayne’s World.
Lara Flynn Boyle Later
She’s had a great career so far including television and Films such as Men in Black II, and 2014’s Lucky Dog. The star might look a bit dowdy in this pic, but I don’t believe she’s worried about it. Lara’s still in demand and it doesn’t matter to her if you recognize her or not from the early days. Plus, she’s a genuinely nice person, from what we hear.
Val was one of those “Guys the girls definitely wanted to party with.” The hugely successful actor played in everything from the lead character in Batman Forever to one of the major stars of Top Gun. We only know that he was considered one of the real hunks of his younger acting years, and was one of Hollywood’s greatest stars.
Val Kilmer Later
OK, we all see it. Val is virtually unrecognizable from his former good looking macho man years. Val’s star is still hugely popular and plays in many movies and has some slated for next year called Weightless (strange enough) and The Snowman (at least it’s not called The Michelin Man).
Whoopi Goldberg Then
Ghost, Sister Act and The Color Purple. Nuff said. Whoopi is one of those enthralling stars who seems to be capable of playing any character she chooses to. Even a stuffy old white guy in The Associate, and don’t forget “Star Trek The Next Generation!” Whoopi has had quite a career whether doing television or films.
Whoopi Goldberg Later
Whoopi loves weed. That’s the bottom line. Though age normally brings weight gain, weed will bring the munchies on just as well, lol. Still, the star cleans up mighty fine. Whoopi is still unrecognizable from that sexy character that played in Jumpin’ Jack Flash, or even Sister Act II. That’s OK Whoopi, we still love you.
Nicole Eggert Then
In the ’80s and ’90s Nicole personified the perfect all-American surfer girl: tan, blonde, and ridiculously fit. She started her rise to fame with a role on the TV series “Charles in Charge” but her breakout role was as Summer Quinn in the smash hit “Baywatch.”
Nicole Eggert Now
Today, the former “Baywatch” babe and mother of two can be seen competing on celebrity reality TV shows like VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club” and E!’s “Botched” for a breast reduction surgery. She also owns an ice cream truck called Scoops. Sweet!
Suzanne Somers was cast in the ABC sitcom “Three’s Company” in January 1977. She was hired the day before the taping of the third and final pilot officially commenced. She portrayed Chrissy Snow, a stereotypical dumb blonde, who was employed as an office secretary. Her portrayal of Chrissy gave her instant sex symbol star status.
Suzanne Somers Later
We will say that being one of the major stars in Hollywood these days is not easy. You have to be virtually flawless. Suzanne usually denies having plastic surgery, but experts in the field know when someone has had “work” done on them. According to those experts, Suzanne’s surgeries have made her nearly unrecognizable from her earlier self. The lips are overdone and she looks a little too unnaturally young – she’ll be 70 this October – for her age.
Elsa Patton is a celebrity psychic who rose in popularity in the Miami community starting in the 1980’s. Her true rise to fame was in 2012 though when she was featured on Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Miami” along with her daughter Marysol. “Mama Elsa” as she was nicknamed, quickly became one of the most popular characters on the show, due in part to her unique look resulting from some botched surgeries.
Elsa Patton Later
During the “Real Housewives of Miami” there was much speculation regarding exactly which surgeries had had, and what had gone wrong with them. Eventually her daughter Marysol addressed the speculation and revealed that Elsa had a botched procedure done on her eyelids done in the 1980’s, which resulted in “hematomas on her eyes for like three years.” There have also been rumors of silicone facial fillers gone wrong, which could explain the inflated appearance around the cheeks and jaw area.
Janice Dickinson Then
It’s hard being a supermodel. It must be excruciating if you were the world’s first supermodel, as Janice always claims to be. Everything has to be perfect, from the shade of lipstick to the toenail paint. True, she is one of the most successful models throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and as one of the stars of “America’s Next Top Model,” she still enjoys the limelight.
Janice Dickinson Later
Janice has no qualms about plastic surgery and freely discusses her procedures. In my opinion, she looks nothing like she used to. Well, maybe her skin tone, but that’s about it. She’s even been on television’s “Botched” to have some of the worst of her plastic surgeries repaired and corrected.
Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart Then
The 18th Duchess of Alba in Spain, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart was one of the richest aristocrats on the continent of Europe. And according to the Guinness Book of World Records, she held more titles than any aristocrat in the world. Her net worth was estimated at $4.9 billion.
Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart Later
Stuart was known for dating and marrying younger men, and toward the end of her life, her habits did not change. In fact, her most recent lover was 64 years old, over two decades younger than the Duchess. Unfortunately, she passed away recently at the age of 88. Even more unfortunately for her boyfriend, she reportedly didn’t leave him any money.
Jackie Stallone Then
Most famously the mother of actor Sylvester Stallone of the 1976 movie Rocky, among many other things, Jackie Stallone is known for being the first woman to have an exercise-focused TV show and for promoting women’s wrestling. Jackie has three children, seven grandchildren, and is 94 years old. She’s also had quite a lot of plastic surgery.
Jackie Stallone Later
Recently, Jackie Stallone suffered a massive heart attack. Following her health scare, she decided to open up to the media about how she feels about her years of plastic surgery. Unfortunately for Jackie, she experienced many botched surgeries, which have left her looking a bit worse for wear. In her words, she looks like “a chipmunk with a mouth full of walnuts.” Yikes.
Mark Hamill Then
Actor and writer Mark Hamil is perhaps best known as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films. He’s even been reported to have said that he felt like audiences thought of him as the actual Like Skywalker. And we have to assume that when they think of him as such, they’re picturing the Hamill above not the Hamill on the next slide…
Mark Hamill Later
Spacetime has not been so kind to Mr. Hamill. Everyone ages, sure. But it’s particularly obvious when stars who we think of as their younger characters (in this case, a young Luke Skywalker) no longer resemble their old selves. At all. Does he still look like a Jedi to you?
Wayne Newton Then
For the last five decades, Wayne Newton has been crooning to the American public from the glitzy stages of Las Vegas, singing hit songs such as “Daddy, Don’t You Walk So Fast” and “Danke Schoen.” He’s known by nicknames like The Midnight Idol and Mr. Entertainment, and when he was younger, he was quite a cutie.
Wayne Newton Later
Since the good ol’ days, Wayne Newton has obviously gotten some work done on his face. In fact, it’s rumored that he’s gotten a facelift. Facelifts are known to produce abnormally tight-looking skin in order to get rid of wrinkles. He does look pretty wrinkle-free for someone who is 74.
Boy George Then
English singer and Grammy-Award-winning pop icon Boy George (born George Alan O’Dowd) was famous for his androgynous style. He had creative hairstyles, wore lots of makeup, and won over men and women, Americans and Europeans alike. The 1990s were his glam heyday, and though he continues to perform, he does look a bit different now.
Boy George Later
A lot of people have creative phases. And a lot of people seem to grow out of them. Boy George will probably always have a lot of fun flair and an edge to his personality, but it would seem that his androgynous styles of yesteryear is no longer his go-to look.
Geena Davis Then
Now 60 years old, Geena Davis has been in the entertainment industry for over 30 years. An actor, writer, producer, and former model, Geen Davis is a well-known figure in the entertainment world. She’s most famous for her roles in the movies Thelma and Louise, The Exorcist, and Beetlejuice.
Geena Davis Later
Being in the public eye can’t be easy. Especially for a woman as the spotlight is more often the brightest on them. Geena Davis actually doesn’t look bad at all. She just looks different, but that’s because she is much, much older than she was in her biggest, most famous roles. Still, she is pretty unrecognizable today.
Goldie Hawn Then
Goldie Hawn is an actress, singer, director, and producer who has been active in the industry since the 1960s. She first became famous for her role on TV show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the movie Private Benjamin, and soon, she’ll play Amy Schumer’s mother in the upcoming film Mother/Daughter.
Goldie Hawn Later
It’s true that Goldie Hawn may not be so recognizable if all you have in your head is a younger version of her. But hey, everyone ages. And she has had quite a career. Besides acting in dozens of TV shows and movies, some of which are award-winning, she also raised three actors. Her children are Oliver Hudson, Kate Hudson, and Wyatt Russel. Not to mention, she’s 70 years old!
