Kody says that with his first wife Meri, “the world is structured and organized, her house is peaceful and in order.” Kody and Meri met back in 1989 when she was just 19 years old. Of their relationship, Meri has said that just two months after meeting, Kody proposed to her.

They married on April 21, 1990, and together had one daughter, Mariah. In a January 2017 episode of Sister Wives, Mariah came out to her father and four mothers, revealing that she was a lesbian. While the family’s Morman fundamentals look down upon homosexuality, Mariah’s parents have been supportive of her, with Kody saying, “We’re not happy that Mariah’s gay, we’re happy that she knows herself.”
