There is one family in America that has become famous for their incredibly open marriage situation and that is the Brown family from TLC’s Sister Wives. The reality television series premiered in September 2010 and documents the life of Kody Brown, the patriarch of a polygamist family, his four wives and their 18 children.

The family has agreed to do the show in an effort to normalize polygamist families and raise awareness about their reality in society. While the series led the family to be investigated for prosecution, Kody Brown insists that their arrangement is legal because he is legally only married to one woman, while his marriages to the other three are considered spiritual unions.
