Robert and Aline Crumb are both popular among the underground comics crowd, with Robert being particularly popular for his cartoons Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. According to a 2007 article by the New York Times, the two “have long had an open marriage.”

While Robert takes a trip to Oregon once a year “to rekindle a relationship with an old girlfriend,” Aline has taken on a new companion she considers a “second husband.” Of the arrangement, Robert has said of Aline’s partner, “Between the two of us, we kind of make an ideal husband, because he can do all the masculine things I can’t do.”
