Shortbus broke many barriers thanks to the writing and directing style of John Cameron Mitchell. The film follows a group of New Yorkers who meet regularly at an artistic and sexual Brooklyn underground salon. The film features plenty of real un-faked scenes. Notably, the film shows close-up penetration and male ejaculation.

A female character, played by Sook-Yin Lee, is desperate to achieve a climax for the first time and when she finally does the film ends. Director Mitchell once said, “In the old days, when you couldn’t show [sensuality] on film, directors like Hitchcock had metaphors…. such as trains going into tunnels, etc.”
