Joker is receiving mixed reviews from both fans and critics but still managed to break the October box office record with $93.5 million. Many are praising Joaquin Phoenix’s role in the film, including a fellow Joker: Mark Hamill.
Hamill began voicing the iconic villain in 1992 for Batman: The Animated Series. After seeing the film he stated that Phoenix is “awesome” at playing the Joker. He says that the film “brilliantly reimagine[s] the character as never seen before.”
“2 thumbs up from that old-school, comic book version … me,” Hamill wrote on Twitter.
The film has been surrounded by controversy and criticism for the depiction of violence. Director Todd Phillips recently addressed the criticism.
“Isn’t that a good thing, to put real-world implications on violence? Isn’t it a good thing to take away the cartoon element about violence that we’ve become so immune to?” Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter.
Will Phoenix be remembered by generations as to be as iconic as past Joker actors? Only time will tell.
