If you haven't seen Avengers: Endgame yet, then you've been warned - there are spoilers ahead.

On Monday, the name Joe Russo, one of the film's two directors, began trending on Twitter. Upon clicking on his name, it appeared he had put himself in hot water by appearing on The Tonight Show and saying, "When I heard Tony Stark say 'billionaire, playboy, philanthropist' in the first Avengers, I decided right then he would be the causality of Endgame. I know he is loved by many. But he is not loved by me. He needs to go."

Marvel fans responded to the "breaking news" story with vitriol, calling for Russo's career to come to a shameful end. The only problem is, Joe Russo likely never spoke these words, and if he did, it's impossible to know the context without watching him actually say it.

As of today, Russo has never appeared on the late-night talk show as a guest. A quick check of the show's website reveals he is not scheduled to be on it in the near future. So what does it all mean?

The most likely scenario is that an angry fan or two made up the quote and it ended up going viral. The moral of the story should be clear - Don't trust everything you read on Twitter!
