It was nearly impossible to turn on the television in the 1980s without seeing Tom Selleck and his iconic mustache. The Michigan-born actor is best known for playing Thomas Magnum on the television series Magnum, P.I. but he’s a favorite in movies like Three Men and a Baby.

Even though he’s all over our screens Selleck has kept notoriously private about his personal life. That is, until recently when he opened up about his marriage to Jillie Joan Mack. See how Selleck managed to find success and love in Hollywood, and why he gave up the spotlight.

He Stumbled Into Becoming A Star

Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1945, Selleck says he came from a balanced upbringing. After moving to California, he played for a division one basketball team and worked as a model.

Soon, it was time for him to start weighing his career options. Selleck impressed at theater school so he began to get a few roles in local commercials. After an appearance on the show The Dating Game, Selleck nabbed a deal with Twentieth Century Fox.
