Ellen DeGeneres Defends Friendship With George W. Bush

Over the weekend, Ellen DeGeneres and former POTUS George W. Bush were seen enjoying a football game with their wives. It caused quite a controversy online, with many believing DeGeneres was in the wrong for laughing and joking with Bush. She has since defending her relationship with the former president.

DeGeneres attended the October 6th Dallas Cowboys game with her wife Portia De Rossi. Their friendship sparked backlash online due to the fact that the former president has held an anti-LGBTQ stance in the past.

"The union of a man and a woman is the most enduring human institution, honored and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith," said Bush in a statement from 2004.

DeGeneres has posted a video on Twitter to defend herself and her friendship.

"People were upset, they thought why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president. Here's the thing, I'm friends with George Bush, in fact I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have," said DeGeneres. "Just because I don't agree with someone on everything doesn't mean that I'm not going to be friends with them."

She continued by saying that everyone should be treated with kindness.

"When I say be kind to one another I don't mean only the people that think the same way that you do, I mean be kind to everyone. Doesn't matter," said DeGeneres.

Many celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon and Kendall Jenner, agreed with her stance on the subject and posted support on social media. However, many fans online are still not convinced that what she did was okay. We have a feeling this controversy is far from over.
