Drunk And Stoned: Actors Who Were Under The Influence While Filming

It’s no secret that drugs and alcohol frequently go hand-in-hand with the Hollywood lifestyle. There’s a lot of money, success, and it can seem like one big party. On the other hand, there is a lot of pressure and it can be easy to get lost in it all. So, here’s a list of some of our favorite actors and actresses who may not have been as sober as we once thought while filming.

Recently, it was hinted at by director Sam Mendes at the Hay Festival in Hay-on-Wye that in the film American Beauty, actors Kevin Spacey and Wes Bentley might have switched out the prop marijuana with the actual stuff for a realistic effect. During the scene in which the two are getting high outside of a real estate convention, Mendes noted that “There may or may not have been real pot available on that particular evening. I couldn’t comment.” However, he also continued to hint that if you watch closely enough, it may appear to be obvious whether they were actually high on marijuana.

It is well-known that actor Richard Burton was a drinking man, especially considering the age in which he came into popularity. He was famed for his ability to hold his liquor, even in beyond-excessive amounts. In a 1969 diary entry, he mentioned that “I am so fundamentally bored with my job that only drink is capable of killing the pain”. In 1972, while filming Under Milk Wood, he claimed to be sober on set which only meant one bottle of vodka a day in comparison to his usual three or more. He eventually went on to become diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and died of a brain hemorrhage in 1984.

In the name of method acting, Shia LeBouf admitted to getting sloshed on moonshine while filming during his 2012 film Lawless. Apparently, it got so bad at one point that co-star Mia Wasikowska threatened to leave the film. LeBouf said that his drinking the moonshine on set was mainly just to imitate the drinking of the character he was playing in order to feel a deeper connection. After all, moonshine was the beverage that Lebouf’s character and his brothers are bootlegging throughout the whole film. This was not the first and would not be the last time that LeBoeuf demonstrated his dedication to method acting.

After filming the Harry Potter series, actor Daniel Radcliff came out to say that he participated in a nightly drinking ritual with himself where he would often come into work the next day still intoxicated. Although he never drank on set, he would drink so much on a nightly basis that he said that it was clear that he was “dead behind the eyes” in many scenes. He stated that after turning 18, he started going off the deep end when the overwhelming amount of fame started to get to him, driving him to drink. However, he has not touched any alcohol since 2010 and is grateful that the paparazzi never really managed to capture his over-indulgence in alcohol.

Elizabeth Taylor was twice-married to the previously mentioned Richard Burton, so it is not surprising that she was consistently intoxicated throughout her acting career as well. She was mostly known for her battle against alcohol and painkiller addiction and she was more often than not drunk while filming. Burton even wrote about Taylor’s vices in his journal while working on a stage play with her which stated, “Elizabeth impossibly sloshed all day long. So much she couldn’t even read the lines”. The two were often known for loving each other immensely, yet fighting often in drunken rages that they usually settled over more alcohol.

While filming Fight Club, it turns out that the scene when the two characters are drinking and hitting golf balls off of the lawn into the street was unscripted. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton had allegedly gotten drunk together off screen after filming and were simply doing that for fun. The next thing you know the camera was pulled out and director David Fincher was shooting the scene to see what would happen. He liked it so much that they included it in the movie. We’re sure that there have been countless scenes in movies in which a few after work drinks turned into a scene in the finished product.

It is reported that during the filming of Apacolypse Now, actor Sam Bottoms was very fascinated with his character of Lance B Johnson. In the film, Bottom’s character uses marijuana and experiments with LSD. So, as it turns out, Sam Bottoms was high himself frequently on set on both speed and marijuana. It is also suggested that he may have experimented with LSD on the set as well for a better understanding of the drug that his character was taking in the film. It is hinted that his off-screen behavior most likely helped to increase the film’s indescribable and trippy energy.

Actually Dazed and Confused

It has been admitted by numerous of the teenaged actors from Dazed and Confused that although the marijuana they smoked on screen was indeed fake, it didn’t mean that they didn’t show up to work on cloud nine. While some may claim this to be a form of method acting, we’re going to say that it’s just teenagers using any excuse to get high before anything. When you’re filming an entire movie about kids getting stoned, nobody can be too surprised when the teenagers are actually smoking doobies.

During the filming of A Hard Day’s Night, it was supposedly hard to keep control of the The Beatles as they had recently discovered the magical properties of marijuana. They would continuously keep sneaking off in order to get stoned making the film’s production harder for everyone involved, especially the director Richard Lester. Ringo Starr even went on to recall that the group would go incredibly far out of their way if it meant they were able to smoke a joint. If this meant running back to their trailers for enough time to get high, then so be it.

As the father of the infamous Charlie Sheen, who is well-known for his partying habits, apparently Martin Sheen got his party on during the filming of Apocalypse Now. In the scene in which his character, a distressed soldier, is left alone in his room with a bottle of booze and his thoughts, Martin decided to go full method acting with lots of alcohol and his own personal problems. The scene was very much real in the fact that Martin became completely unhinged even breaking the mirror and hurting his hand, not as part of the script. Director Francis Ford Coppola attempted to stop the scene but Martin insisted that they continued.

In the film Jaws, Robert Shaw’s character Quint describes the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in one of film histories most chilling monologues. So, before filming, Shaw was allowed to have some drinks in order to get into character. This was because Quint was supposed to be inebriated while telling the story in the film, so it made sense if Shaw was a little drunk too. However, their plan backfired, and Shaw ended up drinking so much before the scene that he had to get carried onto the set and blacked out during filming. However, he came back sober the next day and filmed the scene as we know it today.

While filming her first ‘exposed’ scene, a crew member noticed how nervous she looked and offered her some tequila. She said that after some tequila shots she slid out of the clothes a lot easier than if she had denied them. She went on to tell reporters that when it comes to being an ambitious actress in Hollywood, “Acting 101: three shots of tequila and you’ll be fine!”

While filming Easy Rider, actor Jack Nicholson was less than secretive about describing the excessive drug and alcohol use both on and off screen during the filming of the movie. In particular, Nicholson described the scene by the campfire in which he acknowledged that everyone was completely stoned. He had smoked just about an entire joint to himself and instead of trying to act stoned for the scene, he was so high that he began to have to try and act more sober than he actually was. There was even a rumor going around that Nicholson smoked 155 joints during filming, which he says was a little exaggerated.

Although Belushi was known for his love for getting messed up throughout the majority of his career, while filming The Blues Brothers, things got particularly out of hand. Most of the cast was partaking in drug use (having a separate budget for cocaine), but Belushi took it to a whole new level. He was constantly caught doing cocaine in the middle of the day and got so drunk one day that he was discovered in a stranger’s house demanding a sandwich before he took a nap on their couch. One day, director John Landis found him in his trailer behind a small mountain of cocaine and everyone knew it had to stop. Belushi then hired a bodyguard to prevent him from getting high for the rest of filming.

During the 1960s, Peter O’Toole was no stranger to causing trouble and drinking heavily. So, during his breakthrough performance in the film Lawrence of Arabia, it isn’t a shock that he may have been under the influence during filming at times. In particular, during the big camel riding scene, O’Toole admitted that he and his co-star Omar Sharif got so drunk before the scene that he had no idea what was going on or what he was doing. Also, while filming The Lion in Winter, O’Toole supposedly accidentally cut the top off one of his fingers and was so inebriated that he ended up putting it back on the wrong way, only to discover weeks later after removing his bandages.

Gunnar Hansen played the horrifying and beastly villain Leatherface in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Something that not everyone knows about the filming of the movie is that at one point, it being the 1970s, a lot of the cast and crew partook in ingesting weed brownies. However, Hansen had never had any experience with the drug, and not long after eating them had to film the scene when he chainsaws through a front door. So, in full Leatherface apparel, with a real chainsaw, and while on drugs, Hansen had to chainsaw through a door. Luckily, it all worked out.

After filming the Star Wars trilogy, Carrie Fisher was relatively open about discussing her battle with drug and alcohol abuse during that time. However, she discussed one scene in particular that she remembered when she and costar Harrison Ford were both definitely drunk while filming. One night after having supposedly quit drinking, The Rolling Stones showed up at the home she was renting, and Fisher relapsed. She says that she and Harrison stayed up all night drinking and were both intoxicated when they filmed the scene when they arrived in Cloud City during The Empire Strikes Back.

During the production of the MGM Studios classic The Wizard of Oz, the studio kept actress Judy Garland on a harsh diet of black coffee, chicken soup, and cigarettes in order to ensure that she kept her figure during filming. So, to make sure that she kept to this strict diet, she was also medicating with a mixture of amphetamines and barbiturates so she could still perform while on such a limited diet. In the end, she continued this habit and led a lifetime battle of drug and alcohol addiction that eventually claimed her life at the age of 47.

In the 1942 musical comedy Holiday Inn, Fred Astaire’s drinking habits can be summed up in one scene. As it turns out, the scene in which he had to act out a supposedly drunk dancing scene, didn’t involve much acting. According to his daughter, he took two shots of bourbon for the first take, and one for every take after that. The take that’s in the film is the seventh take, so he took eight shots of bourbon in total while filming that scene and the outcome is very clear if you’ve ever seen the movie.

If you’ve never got around to seeing the rather crude holiday movie Bad Santa, it follows a sad old drunk mall Santa, played by Billy Bob Thorton. His character is essentially beyond wasted throughout the entire movie, so Billy Bob figured he would do the same. He even went on record, noting that “[i]f you’re going to play a guy like this you can’t go halfway drunk, you know. And I wasn’t kind of drunk. You have to go completely into it”. Apparently, this wasn’t too hard for Billy Bob who says he doesn’t mind having a drink or two.
