When you think of a married couple, there are certain things that come to mind. One thing most people assume is that they share the same bed at night. But not every great relationship is founded on spooning before sleeping. You may be surprised to learn that the following couples, while tight in the public eye, don’t snooze next to their better halves. Also, read what several insiders say about President Trump and First Lady Melania’s unique arrangement.
Ryan O’Neal & Farrah Fawcett
This pair slept separately because their son Redmond took over the bed. O’Neal wrote in his book, Both Of Us: My Life With Farrah, “I had no other choice but to sleep on the floor or in the other room. Eventually, he outgrew this, but by then, Farrah and I had grown used to our privacy and it stuck, and even when we traveled after that, we’d often get adjoining rooms.”
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West
We can’t verify the accuracy of the report, but according to Radar Online, Kim Kardashian and Kanye west have separate bedrooms. The source explained: “Kim and Kanye don’t sleep in the same bedroom in the new house. At Kris’s house they had to be together because there wasn’t a lot of room. At the new house they have tons and tons of space and so they are apart even when they’re home. And night is the worst time.” But it’s not due to trouble in paradise: “Kim is dealing with the kids at night and Kanye is working a lot…Kim and Kanye might live in the same house, but they don’t even see each other sometimes.”
Donald & Melania Trump
It appears that the President and the First Lady may also sleep separately. “Multiple sources” told Us Weekly that Melania Trump, who currently lives in New York City’s Trump Tower with their son Barron while Donald Trump works in Washington, D.C., refuses to share a bed with her husband even when they are together in the same city. A source said: “They have separate bedrooms. They never spend the night together — ever.” An additional insider said they stay in the same room but have separate beds, explaining, “It’s very ‘royal’ of them!” For the record, a rep for Melania denied the “fictional accounts.”
Queen Elizabeth II & Prince Philip
Perhaps less surprising is that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have separate bedrooms. She just turned 91 and he’s 95, so they can’t still be intimate with one another, can they? The Queen’s cousin, Lady Pamela Hicks, revealed in a biography by Sally Bedell Smith in 2011 that there’s a very good reason the royals opt for different bed chambers: “In England, the upper class always have had separate bedrooms. You don’t want to be bothered with snoring or someone flinging a leg around. Then when you are feeling cozy you share your room sometimes. It is lovely to be able to choose.”
Tim Burton & Helena Bonham Carter
While they may no longer be together, director Tim Burton and actress Helena Bonham Carter famously shared not only two different bedrooms but two separate houses during their relationship. The homes were located next to one another. Carter reportedly didn’t like sleeping with the filmmaker because he snored. And he also had a penchant for pacing around the room and watching TV when he couldn’t sleep — a habit many would find irritating. Burton also reportedly needed a break from Burton’s constant chatter, so living in separate homes made sense (even with two children between them).
Ellen DeGeneres & Portia DeRossi
Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia DeRossi have faced a lot of rumors over the years. One of the struggles they’ve reportedly argued about is whether or not to have children. It was recently reported that the pair is not even living together anymore and have separate bedrooms. An insider told Radar Online: “All this time, Portia was the wife- a housewife. She spat on her acting life and helped Ellen to build a career. But the last few weeks, they were constantly fighting and after one of these quarrels Portia gathered her things and moved into a house in Beverly Hills.”
Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes
Does sleeping separately precipitate a breakup? Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes slept in different bedrooms, Star magazine reported in 2007 before the famous couple divorced in 2012. Katie was Catholic when they started dating, so “it was the proper thing to do.” Also, Cruise snored. An insider told the tabloid: “It’s a situation that works for both of them. In fact, they even joke about having separate bedrooms to their friends – Katie says Tom snores, and this way she can get her beauty sleep! Of course they spend time together alone at night like most married couples; after all, they conceived Suri!”
Kris & Bruce Jenner
In 2013, before the world came to know Bruce Jenner as Caitlyn Jenner, it was revealed that he and his wife, Kris Jenner, slept apart from one another. Daughter Khloe Kardashian told Jay Leno on the Tonight Show that the couple’s relationship was just fine even though they lived in different houses. She explained, “Well they’re not having problems but they still like to live apart, which is definitely different… in my house, there is a man room for [then husband] Lamar. A room, not a different house. So I think they took my idea and ran with it and they got another house, and Bruce stays there sometimes.”
Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
It was a huge shock when Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie announced they were splitting up after over 10 years together. After all, they have six children and seemed like the perfect couple. But a former bodyguard for the couple told In Touch Weekly that the couple often slept in separate bedrooms, perhaps alluding that there was trouble in paradise before the big breakup was announced. While the rumor was never addressed by the couple, Jolie once admitted to Vanity Fair that the pair sometimes slept in one “giant bed” with their kids, Maddox, Shiloh, Pax, Vivienne, Knox and Zahara.
Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick
Reality stars Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardashian is another pair that didn’t sleep together and wound up splitting up. The couple shocked viewers of Kourtney & Kim Take New York when they revealed that they slept in separate beds. But the reason is more common than you think — and yes, it once again involves a child. Once the news made headlines, Disick felt compelled to explain to fans why he and Kardashian didn’t share a bedroom, writing on Twitter: “Just want to clear up the reason why we don’t sleep in bed together. I’m not a good sleeper and with [son] Mason in bed I can’t fall to sleep!”
Kevin Jonas & Danielle Deleasa
Singer Kevin Jonas was just 22 when he married Danielle Deleasa, and after just five months of marriage it was revealed that the pair slept separately. A source told In Touch Weekly that the duo preferred different beds because Danielle couldn’t rest due to her new husband’s snoring. The insider said: “Kevin and Danielle had never spent a night together until their wedding night, so she had no clue that he snores so loudly. She loves her husband, but now she sleeps in a guest room when he gets too noisy. They are still crazy about each other, but the snoring has become a big joke for their friends.”
Tori Spelling & Dean McDermott
Sometimes it’s more than snoring that forces a couple to sleep apart. Former Beverly Hills, 90210 star Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott weren’t shy about putting their lives under a microscope during their stint on their reality show, True Tori. And when Dean’s cheating scandal made headlines, there were rumors they slept separately for a while. It was well known that the pair went through a serious rough patch, and it makes sense that they would need a little space from one another in order to get things back on track again. Well, it worked. Tori recently gave birth to their fifth child.
Baz Luhrmann & Catherine Martin
Director Baz Luhrmann has been collaborating with his wife, Catherine Martin, a costume designer, for many years. And while they work together, they don’t sleep together. During an interview with the Daily Mail, the filmmaker explained that he and his wife started sleeping in separate rooms many years ago because they began having problems in their relationship because they lived together and worked together so much. But they have Saturday night date night. They go to dinner, perhaps a show, and then spend the night in a hotel. The unusual relationship has done wonders for their marriage — and they make it work!
Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck definitely started sleeping in separate bedrooms after they announced their split in June 2015 amid rumors that the actor had an affair with the nanny. Yet, the couple was subsequently spotted together with their children on numerous occasions before jointly filing for divorce — a staggering two years later. Many fans held out hope that the couple would work things out, if not for them than for their three children. And even after Affleck spent a stint in rehab, it didn’t help the couple patch things up. The pair made it official in April 2017 that it was over.
Lucy & Desi On I Love Lucy
In the 1930s, the Hays Code made on-screen couples kiss with their feet on the floor and sleep in separate beds in order to avoid any scandalous suggestions. While the rule was created to appease British censors, Hollywood soon followed suit. In addition to separate beds, bathrooms on film and television didn’t include toilets in order to avoid potty humor. That’s why Lucy and Ricky on I Love Lucy slept in separate beds and the Brady Bunch family, all eight of them, famously lived in a house without a single toilet. By the 1960s, this antiquated code was abandoned, and viewers saw on screen how people lived in real life.
David & Victoria Beckham
Even though David and Victoria Beckham renewed their wedding vows in January 2017, there have been lots of rumors over the years that things aren’t what they seem behind closed doors. OK! magazine, which is a pretty big gossip mag, reported earlier this year that the couple has tried for many years to make their relationship work but are trying to figure out a way to end it. And although they’re struggling, and maybe sharing separate bedrooms, they don’t plan on divorcing anytime soon because they are so busy with their careers. As a result, any news of a split won’t be coming in the near future.
Carmelo Anthony & La La Anthony
Basketball star Carmelo Anthony and his wife La La Anthony are definitely living in separate bedrooms and it’s not because of snoring. The pair recently split after seven years of marriage and are planning on getting divorced. La La, who stars on Power alongside 50 Cent, moved out of the couple’s home and has been living in her own place in New York City. They are currently working out custody arrangements for their son Kiyan, 10. Carmelo has been accused of having an affair with an exotic dancer in NYC, and it’s been rumored that she’s over six months pregnant with his baby.
Scarlett Johansson and Romain Dauriac
Scarlett Johansson and Romain Dauriac are one of those confusing couples who blur the lines between togetherness and distance. While the duo, which has been married two years and has a child together, revealed they were divorcing in January, they reportedly broke up the previous summer. Separate bedrooms? Most definitely. Despite their relationship status, the couple has continued to attend events together, making things even more confusing. They attended the “Singular Object” opening cocktail reception in New York City just one month after the actress officially filed for divorce. The estranged couple, who don’t appear to be sharing a bedroom but are still going out together, are working out custody arrangements.
Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana
Janet Jackson is a brand new mom (at 50 years old!), but there are some things in her life she can’t celebrate, including her marriage. Just three months after welcoming her first child, son Eissa, she and her husband, Wissam Al Mana, are not only sleeping separately, they’re getting a divorce. The couple secretly wed in 2012, but things didn’t fare well for the pop star and the Qatari business magnate (who’s worth an estimated $ billion). Money can’t buy happiness or make a relationship work. The split was reportedly amicable, but Al Mana’s “controlling” ways during her pregnancy has been blamed.
Mel B & Stephen Belafonte
It isn’t a stretch to believe that former Spice Girls star Mel B and her husband Stephen Belafonte shared separate beds for quite some time. The America’s Got Talent judge filed for divorce from her husband just shy of their 10-year anniversary. The couple secretly wed in Las Vegas in 2007 and have a daughter together. Mel B publicly accused her husband of physically abusing her and has accused their former nanny Lorraine Gilles of having an affair with Belafonte, getting pregnant, and then having an abortion. In response, Gilles has filed a defamation lawsuit against the former pop star.
