Mervyn Leroy first got his start as a gag writer and actor in the silent film version of the Ten Commandments under the helm of famed director Cecil B. DeMille. It was then that he was inspired to work as a director himself after witnessing DeMille work. Ultimately, he directed many successful films and he was chosen as the head of production at MGM. He is the one responsible for choosing to make The Wizard of Oz. He also was the one who discovered a ton of Old Hollywood icons, including Clark Gable, Loretta Young, Robert Mitchum and Lana Turner.
