Since he was first cast, Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Alec Guinness had a particularly negative opinion about his character and the Star Wars franchise as a whole. In his biography Dangerous Mind, it’s noted that he wrote to his friends that he had been offered a role in a George Lucas film but was concerned about the genre.
He wrote, “[It’s] science fiction, which gives me pause […] Fairy-tale rubbish, but could be interesting perhaps.” In a later correspondence, he made it clear that he loathed the role when he stated: “Can’t say I’m enjoying the film […] New rubbish dialogue reaches me every other day on wadges of pink paper, and none of it makes my character clear or even bearable.” Unfortunately for Guinness, he was forever remembered as Obi-Wan.
Could you be embarrassed playing a role that’s a version of yourself?
