Marlon Brando received his first big performance as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, based on the play by the same name written by Tennesse Williams. Some say that this role is equally as impressive as his performance in The Godfather. However, no matter how good he may have been, Brando hated the character of Stanley Kowalski more than anything. He claims that Kowalski is nothing close to who he is as a person although his performance appeared so natural that people assumed so.

To pull off the role, he says that he mimicked all of the people he knew that were “muscled, inarticulate, aggressive animals who go through life responding to nothing but their urges and never doubting them.” People that Brando looked down on.
