The Carrie Connection

The Carrie Connection

Stranger Things‘ Eleven is clearly an inspiration from the 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Carrie—and the similarities are seemingly endless. Both Eleven and Carrie are females powerhouses who possess a range of telekinetic powers. Both girls are the product of over-protective upbringings with Eleven’s guardian being a semi-crazed scientist and Carrie’s mother a religious zealot. Both characters appear to be relatively kind and innocent, yet when provoked, lash out and turn violent. Even some of the shots in Stranger Things are a direct reference to Carrie—like the way they both have trance-like stares. No to mention the scene when Eleven’s hand pushes through the goo to get out of the Upside Down is done in a very Carrie-like way.
