Joanna Garcia started her career on television on Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? as Samantha. In order to film thr role, she commuted from her native Florida all the way to Montreal. After small roles in a few other shows and a brief stint at Florida State University, Garcia moved to LA where her career took off as Reba’s daughter Cheyenne on the show, Reba.
After Reba, Garcia acted in other shows such as Priveleged, Gossip Girl, and How I Met Your Mother. In 2010, she married MLB player Nick Swisher and since the marriage has been credited as Joanna Garcia Swisher. Aside from acting, Garcia volunteers teaching kids who are learning English as a second language.
Singer and actress Keke Palmer began making a name for herself at 11 and 13 years old in films Babershop 2: Back in Business and Akeelah and the Bee, respectively. Afterwards, she signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and began a singing career, but still continued to act and usually had some of her own songs featured in the movies she was in.
Palmer became a Nickelodeon fixture in 2008, when she had her won show called True Jackson, VP, in which she played a teen who gets hired as Vice President at a fashion house. While she hasn’t necessarily left television, Green found plenty of success in theatre. She had roles in productions of The Wizard of Oz, The Secret Garden, The Fantasticks, Romeo and Juliet, and West Side Story. In 2005, she went on the First North American Tour of Wicked, in which she played Nessarose. She was also the understudy for Elphaba, which she had an opportunity to play over 40 times.
Do you remember The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo? The show ran in the late ’90s with Malaysian-American actress Irene Ng in the title role. The show centered around Shelby Woo, a Chinese-American teenager who lived with her grandfather. Woo interned at a local police department, where she’d often take the liberty of solving cases on her own despite the dismay of her supervisors and her grandfather.
Leaving Acting Behind
Irene Ng also had small rols on All My Children, Figure It Out, and Law & Order. She even appeared in The Joy Luck Club and Heaven & Earth. But after she was done with acting, she pursued a degree at Harvard and subsequently was a banker for Merrill Lynch. Today, however, Ng is married and works as a preschool teacher in Connecticut.
