The hit comedy-drama TV series Ally McBeal first aired in 1997. The series centered around the fictional Cage and Fish law firm in Boston, in which young lawyer Ally McBeal joins after leaving her old practice. Over the five-year period that the show aired there were plenty of scandals to go around. Some actors quit the show while others struggled with personal issues behind the scenes. However, the show went on and it was one of the most popular of its time.
Other Actresses That Were Almost Ally
Before Calista Flockhart was cast as Ally, actress Lara Flynn Boyle went after the role in 1997, when the show was hosting auditions. Hundreds of women were said to have read for the part of Ally. Although Flynn Boyle didn’t land the part, she got a smaller role, playing Tally Cupp in a couple of episodes. Interestingly enough, the role was said to be perfect for actress Bridget Fonda, but she refused to read the script. In 1999, Fonda said that she didn’t want to do television so she didn’t even consider Ally McBeal.
Fortunately, this all worked in Flockhart’s favor.
