Evolution Of Olsen Twin Style

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been style icons since they were toddlers on the hit show “Full House.” From matching outfits in the 90s to “homeless chic” to full-out fashion royalty, the Olsen twins have never been afraid to express their unique style.

As they transitioned from small-screen stardom to mega-fame, Americans have had the opportunity to watch Mary Kate and Ashley come into their own.

Over the last 30 years, they’ve inspired millions around the globe to take bold, brave fashion risks. Read this article to re-live the fashion memories from our favorite “Full House” stars: the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright weird.

Cue the awwwww’s! Mary-Kate and Ashley look downright adorable promoting their hit show “Full House” in 1991. The sweaters tied around their waists make them seem like normal kids instead of sitcom sweethearts. If you think the matching floral dresses, frilly white socks and scrunchies scream early nineties, then you have to check out their next crazy, but adorable, choice.

Mary-Kate and Ashley have been taking fashion risks since they were mere tots. And we don’t think we’ve seen anything cuter than these outfits, especially the hats! Complete with black and white stripes, gigantic red bows, gold buttons and patent leather flats, we’ll dub this look “Parisian Sailor Chic.”

1995 – Age 9: Japanese Chic

At the premiere for their first feature film, It Takes Two, we start to see Mary-Kate and Ashley’s fashion choices maturing. While these silk Japanese-style dresses slightly remind us of pajamas, they’re chic and age-appropriate. And they weren’t afraid of wearing the same thing more than once! This isn’t the only time photographers have snapped the girls wearing these outfits on the red carpet.

1998 – Age 12: Power Couple

1998 – Age 12: Power Couple

At the 1998 red carpet premiere of Spice World, the Olsen Twins give a glimpse into their future as successful businesswomen. But these semi-matching shiny pantsuits and crisp menswear-inspired blouses seem more appropriate for the office than they do the red carpet. Thankfully, the next look is completely different.

1998 – Age 12: Famous Tweens with Famous Haircuts

Did Mary-Kate and Ashley copy Jennifer Aniston’s haircut in 1998? What do you think?

They’ve nailed late 90s chic with matching lacy tank tops, silk floral skirts and chunky shoes. While this look is very ‘of the era,’ it is downright perfection compared to the twins’ next ensemble. It also shows their emerging fashion sense.

1999 – Age 13: Full-Length Flop

1999 – Age 13: Full-Length Flop

The Olsen twins should have fired their stylist after this disaster. The length on those maxi skirts is downright awkward and what is with the fringe? Strappy shoes, buttoned up cardigans and chokers make this ensemble look like a late-90s version of “Little House on the Prairie.”

If you think this is bad, the next few years weren’t any better for Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Hey, remember when it was cool to let your midriff peek out? The Olsen twins sure do. Mary-Kate and Ashley’s all-black ensembles seem appropriate for a 2001 NSYNC album launch party. But I’m sure after seeing that tiered skirt, Justin didn’t feel so bad about his infamous VMAs denim debacle. Bye, bye, bye (Felicia)!

And then…this happened.

Those shapeless, see-through tube tops. The lace. The butterfly print. The weird accessories. And are those really thin tank top straps or are they the weird hook thingies meant to make it easier to hang? We’ll probably never know. Really, what more can we say? This mall-inspired ensemble was not one of the Olsen twins’ best looks.

While MK and Ash looked stunning at the 2003 Charlie’s Angels premiere, we are crying a little inside that their dresses didn’t match. During this time period, each Olsen started expressing her unique sense of style. And that’s not the only thing that changed… click on the next slide to find out what else did.

2004 – Age 18: Shining Stars

Mary-Kate and Ashley looked incredible unveiling their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But do you notice how they’re sorta semi-smiling? 2004 was the year they stopped smiling with their teeth in pictures. Regardless of the smile, these satin dresses are gorgeous. We love the cut of Mary-Kate’s lavender-colored frock (left) and the delicate details on Ashley’s heavenly white ensemble (right).

As the Olsen twins became adults, they took their fashion game to a new level. This look is a bold (and welcome) departure from the outfits they donned just three years earlier. Everything is right about Mary-Kate’s gorgeous red jacket and mismatched accessories, and Ashley’s backless black gown is classic with a twist of personality.

The Olsens were looking flawless in 2006, the year they launched their high-fashion line The Row, named after Savile Row in London. Mary-Kate elevated her simple dress black dress (left) with a gorgeous feather bag and bracelets encrusted with enough diamonds to blind someone. And don’t get me started on Ashley’s dress (right)! It manages to be both complex and simple at the same time, and the cinch of her belt perfectly flatters her frame. Both girls slayed it with pops of red on the lips and tips.

Work, girls, work! These Gatsby-inspired getups are EVERYTHING. Everything.

We are dying over the detailing on Ashley’s crushed velvet dress (left). DYING. And don’t get us started on that leather blazer. So. Good. MK’s tiered flapper-esque maxi is better than pizza. Yes, we said it. BETTER THAN PIZZA, we say!

In the mid-late 2000s, Mary-Kate became well-known for her signature “homeless chic” look, right around the time she and Ashley launched their contemporary fashion line, Elizabeth and James. Personally, we think MK (left) looks like a blonde Cruella DeVille in this photo. Put down the eyeliner and back away slowly…

This is another example of the twins’ “homeless chic” look. How do they look unshowered but SO pretty at the same time? It’s just unfair. This photo was snapped in 2008, the year Mary-Kate and Ashley published Influence, which includes interviews with some of the most famous names in the fashion industry.

This is the year the Olsen twins died and went to fashion heaven. Ashley has risen to angel status with that structured, gauzy, ethereal, plunging Christian Lacroix masterpiece! Swoon! And the subtle peek of Mary Kate’s leg in Lanvin is to die for. Quite a bold statement, cementing their status as fashion legends.

While we can’t get enough of this look, the next one has us giddy.

Who doesn’t love a good MK & Ashley matching moment? Oh, the nostalgia! They even have the same hair color in this photo. AND – it even appears that Ashley is just about to flash a toothy grin for the paps. Last but certainly not least, we can’t forget the sunglasses. INSIDE. Because Mary-Kate and Ashley.

The Olsens glow in flowing golden frocks. Mary Kate’s (right) is a throwback to 70s glam. We love her crimped locks, flashy jewelry, and fur full-length coat. Ashley’s dress (left) looks like it could have come straight from Bollywood. On anyone else, this look wouldn’t translate. It might appear goofy, garish, and just… strange. But naturally, Ashley pulls it off like a champ.

The Olsens opted for vintage gowns for the 2014 Met Gala. Ashley, left, chose Gianfranco Ferré and Mary-Kate, right, selected Chanel. This is quite a bold look. Again, the twins show that they’re not afraid to take risks. Mary Kate’s gown is on the verge of swallowing her up but doesn’t quite cross the line.

At age 30, the Olsen twins have shown that they’re more than just the adorable little girls from “Full House.” Today, they’re bona fide fashion powerhouses. To prove it, they showed up in designs from their own label, The Row. We don’t know how Mary-Kate’s (right) baggy gown works, but it does. And Ashley stuns with a gilded jacket and chic accessories.
