Politicians (Sarah Palin, Rudy Guiliani, and Queen Elizabeth, to name a few) spend most of their lives in the spotlight. After all, literally millions of people rely on them to make important decisions every single day. But how can we trust their executive skills when we can’t even trust their fashion choices?
It’s Hard Not to Slip Up
It seems that politicians have more clothing malfunctions than the people they were elected to represent, so we decided to put together a list of the most egregious fashion mishaps we could find! We have to admit… some of these are just downright hilarious! Sarah Palin is one of our favorites here, although it probably felt pretty unfortunate to her. Keep reading to see why.
George W. Bush Looks Like He’s in a Cult
These traditional Vietnamese outfits are absolutely beautiful, but US President George W. Bush and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are making them nothing but awkward. They say moments are, “only awkward if you make them awkward,” but these two haven’t figured that out yet. Another outfit from this iconic frenemy duo is coming up.
Chris Christie and … This
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie famously lost over a hundred pounds of weight after having gastric bypass surgery a few years ago! Before that, however, he struggled to find clothes that properly fit him, as is the case at this baseball charity event. This is unpleasant. But not as unpleasant as many consider Christie.
What exactly is going on next?
Ivanka Trump Is Full Of Wind
Before she was known as the daughter of the president, Ivanka Trump was a household name. But even presidential offspring aren’t immune from the occasional wardrobe malfunction. Here, Ivanka’s dress appears to be lifted by a stray gust of wind as she plays a round of her father’s favorite game. Nice form, Ivanka.
Queen Elizabeth Gets Messy
It looks like Queen Elizabeth II, head of United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, had a wild night out here. She’s seen leaving a birthday party for her cousin, King Constantine of Greece, with both a stained dress AND a broken chain on her handbag. When you’ve reigned as long as she has, some wardrobe malfunctions are bound to happen eventually.
Michelle Obama’s Booty
Even First Lady and fashion icon Michelle Obama messes up sometimes! Her skirt went flying as she exited Air Force One, but she, fortunately, had the President standing by to protect her from a fashion disaster. Not only is he the Commander in Chief, he’s also the National Fashion Police. Keep reading to see another skirt mishap!
Justin Trudeau: The Rip Heard Round The World
It’s a safe bet to call the current Canadian Prime Minister one of the hottest politicians out there today. He’s an all-around good guy as well as being hilarious and sweet. But look, even Trudeau can’t avoid ripping his pants every now and then. This unfortunate tear took place during an athletic event in 2011.
Trump Boards Air Force One With Toilet Paper On His Shoe
It’s one thing for the average human to get toilet paper stuck to their foot and walk around public with it. It’s an entirely different ballgame when it happens to the President of the United States. Although he was surrounded by security, boarding Air Force One in Minneapolis after speaking at a midterm campaign event, no one alerted POTUS of the toilet paper that was stuck to his shoe.
So he made the walk of shame, exiting the limo and boarding Air Force One with the sheet stubbornly stuck to his dress shoe, as the cameras rolled. Someone will probably get fired for this…
Donald Trump: What Is His Hair?!
President Donald Trump is notoriously persnickety about his hair! He doesn’t allow anyone to touch it, so the entire country is left wondering whether or not he wears a wig. On this particular day, though, he didn’t do such a good job styling it (wig or not) into his classic ‘do. That corn looks better rocking that style than he does.
Michela Vittoria Brambilla is an Italian politician. In her career, she has been nominated for undersecretary of tourism, was appointed the Minister of Culture and Tourism, and went on to start The People of Freedom movement. She’s also the president of two companies, but apparently, no one is immune to wardrobe malfunctions — as this photo shows.
Up next is a former first lady with a lot in the trunk.
Nick Clegg Stuffs or Nah?
Deputy Prime Minister of the British Liberal Democrats Party needs to keep all of his body parts in check! He wore this classy outfit to give a speech, but he didn’t consider the battle of the bulge he was going to have to fight with his crotch area. Yikes!
Elena Udrea and Her Cleavage
At first glance, it looks like she is about to flash everybody!
Romanian Tourism Minister Elena Udrea certainly gave the people of her country a peep show when she wore this revealing shirt and blazer combo! Fortunately, she was able to quickly pull up her blouse and get back to her official business. Good save, Udrea! Women everywhere are proud of you.
Muammar Gaddafi Is A Runway Icon
Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi certainly had an unusual fashion sense during his lifetime. Some of his outfits could be credited to his African heritage and culture, but he could have at least tried to match. Still, we think it may be a little bit unfair to knock on Libyan traditions without fully understanding them.
A little slip caused this next victim to show more than she wanted.
Evo Morales and the Sweater He Never Washes
Bolivian President Evo Morales must REALLY like this sweater! After all, he wears it everywhere! Here in the States, we would be more likely to find this colorful frock in the aisles of Goodwill than on the body of our country’s most powerful man! Still, though, we really like this sweater and can’t blame him for staying cozy!
For this next actress, it must have been really cold in that room!
Hillary Clinton and the Pantsuit Revolution
Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton is in a weird situation with this one! She’s not actually the one having a wardrobe malfunction; Actress Natalie Portman is! We have to wonder, though… Why didn’t the famous New York politician warn her new friend to grab a sweater? Maybe she didn’t notice until after the photos were taken.
Kim Jong Il, the Real-Life Bond Villain
The now-deceased Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Il, had a weird fashion sense! It’s true that the United States government doesn’t know much about daily life in this reclusive Asian country, but we have to wonder why their most powerful leader was always dressed like he was ready to go on an African safari!
Missing one button is fine but to miss a row is inexplicable. See why next.
David Cameron Missed a Button… Or Five
Former British Prime Minister spends most of his time attending official state functions. Sometimes, though, he forgets to button his shirt up all the way! That was the case at this event, though he was able to turn around and fix his fashion mishap before too much damage could be done.
Fidel Castro, the Tracksuit Dictator
Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro is a fan of Adidas tracksuits. A BIG fan. He can often be spotted sporting these athletic numbers around the city of Havana. Adidas has stated that they don’t have any specific opinion on the third-world dictator being such a fan of their clothing. In situations like this, it’s probably best to say nothing at all.
The former leader that is up next had some questionable fashion sense.
Mao Zedong’s Bland Wardrobe
Can someone say BORING?! Mao Zedong, the now deceased Communist leader of China, famously wore the same outfit almost every day. It consisted of a four pocket coat and sensible black shoes. And they were carefully polished, of course! This does seem to make sense though when you consider the political party he represented.
What you are about to witness can either be slightly funny or partially incriminating.
Mitt Romney Representing The GOP
Former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney, made pulled off a big head scratcher when he wore his pants slightly too big! When he leaned over, he flashed an entire room of his supporters. Needless to say, he didn’t wear those pants out in public again. It is smart to never make that mistake twice.
You would hope that your skirt wouldn’t keep unzipping like the person up next.
There are a surprising number of photos featuring former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in drag. Earlier this year, The Late Show host Stephen Colbert even discovered old footage of Giuliani, dressed as a woman, while Donald Trump gropes him. You can’t make this stuff up. In this picture, Rudy is dressed as Victor Victoria at the Inner Circle Annual Show in 1997. Wardrobe malfunction or the best he’s ever looked? You decide.
See if you know who the original Fergie is and how her wardrobe malfunction happened.
Kate Middleton Sometimes Wears Underwear
Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge (better known as Princess Kate), is gone with the wind in this photo! A strong breeze caught her skirt, revealing her derriere to the world. Kate’s usually incredibly graceful and collected, but we all mess up sometimes. Keep on clicking to see another British celeb.
Theresa May’s Constantly Un-Zipping Pencil Skirt
British Home Minister Theresa May needs to meet with a clothing repair specialist ASAP! If she had done this before this picture was taken, she wouldn’t have had to have gone through the trauma of her skirt becoming unzipped on live TV. Now that is a wardrobe malfunction to be afraid of. At the end of the day, she probably got a kick out of it.
Augusto Pinochet, The Caped Wonder
Starting us off is Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. His accomplishments include leading a 17-year military coup, ruling in an exceedingly sinister way, and owning an impressive collection of… capes. That’s right, folks. This gruesome and terrifying leader was a lover of superhero-style apparel. To each his (or her, in Sarah Palin’s case) own, right?
Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France who also headed the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party, is known for staying in shape. Hey, when you’re married to a supermodel (Carla Bruni) you’d better keep yourself fit! As we see here, though, he sometimes sweats profusely even when he’s not actively exercising. Not a good look when giving a speech or mingling with supporters.
Remember to always check if your fly is down! See why next.
David Miliband, a British Labour Party politician, was caught snoozing on the Tube in London by a fellow passenger. Unfortunately for Miliband, his trouser fly was wide open as he dozed. The passenger who snapped the picture said, “I was laughing to myself about it anyway until I noticed his fly was down – then it was just hilarious.”
Sarah Palin’s Underwear
Former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin once ran her very own YouTube channel. However, this adventure was quickly cut short when her sweater slid down during a baking episode. At the very least, America got to see what kind of undergarments the larger-than-life personality enjoys wearing. Not that anyone wanted to.
Vladimir Putin’s Cultural Flair
Here’s another photograph of fashion-forward political foes Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush in Chile. It’s not that the outfits they are wearing count as wardrobe mishaps, it’s that they’ve made the whole situation awkward by refusing to even touch each other. That’s definitely not statesmanly or a good show for their image.
Who Wears The Pants?
Abdul Hameed Dogar, the former Justice of Sindh High Court in Pakistan, suffered a pretty embarrassing wardrobe malfunction when he greeted a visiting dignitary. In a video of the incident, a gunshot blast happened just as Dogar’s trousers dropped… is fear a possible explanation for this unfortunate event?
If you are wearing a skirt or dress, make sure you check the wind levels that day. Just learn from the misses up next.
Adlai Stevenson’s Shoes
In 1952, Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson was pictured at an event with a large hole in the sole of his shoe. Largely perceived as aristocratic and not a candidate that common folks could get behind, Stevenson loved the photo which showed that he was just like everyday people. This picture later won a Pulitzer Prize.
The next malfunction is highly controversial. We’ll leave it up to you to decide.
Victoria Pérez’s child had to eat
This isn’t a wardrobe malfunction as much as a political statement about women’s rights, but it earned a place on this list. Argentine legislator Victoria Analía Donda Pérez made waves when she breastfed her infant daughter during a parliamentary session in 2013. Pérez received both praise and criticism for her action at the Congressional Palace in Buenos Aires.
Ted Cruz Wears a Larger Man’s Hand-Me-Downs?
Forget about Bridgegate! This Texas Senator and former White House hopeful should go to prison for his fashion crimes! We’re only joking, but the politician has been widely criticized for wearing clothes that are far too big for him. He could be trying to start his own style that he hopes lingers around to all politicians.
It doesn’t matter if you’re one of the most powerful men in the world… this beach wear is a total no-no. The two-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, was spotted here in his knitted swimwear on the beach in 1911. This photo originally appeared in The Tatler.
Apparently, even a queen doesn’t prepare for the wind and as a result, one cameraman saw it all. Click next to see for yourself.
Queen Letizia of Spain
Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano is the Queen of Spain and is the wife of King Felipe VI. She’s a well-educated woman who had a career as a news anchor before becoming royalty, but that doesn’t make her immune to the occasional wardrobe malfunction. She fell victim the same way Ivanka Trump did and that is unfortunate.
Ken Bone, Just Trying To Make His Mother Proud
You can’t talk about political wardrobe malfunctions in 2016 and not mention Ken Bone. Bone, a common man whose image went viral after he wore a red Christmas sweater to the second presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, chose his garb that day because of a major snafu with his planned outfit.
Explains Bone, “I had a really nice olive suit that I love a great deal and my mother would have been very proud to see me wearing on television, but apparently I have gained about 30 pounds and when I went to get into my car the morning of the debate, I split the seat of my pants all the way open. So the red sweater is plan B, and I am glad it worked out.”
That Wet Spot In The Wrong Spot
It’s understandable that you’d get excited at the prospect of becoming president. But Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos Calderón may have gotten a little bit too enthused when he gave a speech during his 2014 reelection campaign. Unfortunately for him, none of his aides mentioned the growing wet spot at the front of his pants. But hey, let’s give him a break – he won the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. Not too shabby.
Vlad The Unclad
Why is Vladimir Putin always shirtless? And will he be able to talk his buddy Donald Trump into adopting the same style? The Russian president definitely enjoys going without a top, to the point that there was actually a 2016 calendar featuring him, with the title “All Year With The President Of Russia.” At least hit the gym a few more times a week.
Up next another Middleton makes the list in a revealing way!
Pippa Middleton Shows Some Skin
You know that if Kate Middleton is on this list that Pippa is too. The Duchess of Cambridge’s sister flashed the tops of her thighs while she watched a match in the Royal Box at Wimbledon in June 2016. The poppy-patterned dress just did not seem to want to stay in place while Middleton sat in it. The silver lining is that it could have been way worse for her.
When legendary comedian Mel Brooks was presented with a Medal Of Arts award by President Obama, he couldn’t resist joking around. Brooks first bowed to receive his medal, then suddenly pretended to pull down the president’s pants. Luckily, the move didn’t work… that would have been quite a wardrobe malfunction moment
The Original Fergie
Sarah Ferguson, the original Fergie, and ex-wife of Prince Andrew, is The Duchess of York. She was quite a wild child (for royalty, anyway) back in the day. It appears that some of her old habits have stuck with her, as this photo indicates. In it, Sarah is seen flashing her Spanx as she exits a vehicle.
Tony Blair Gets All Wet
And here we have another wardrobe malfunction in the form of a shirt that just cannot contain massive amounts of sweat. Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was known for getting sweaty during speeches. This photo is just one example of his profuse sweatiness.
Hey, Hey, LBJ
This entry belongs in the category “wardrobe malfunction prevention.” President Lyndon Baines Johnson was not one to mince words, as evidenced in one recorded phone call when he ordered himself some trousers. “But, uh when I gain a little weight they cut me under there. So, leave me you never do have much of margin there. See if you can’t leave me an inch from where the zipper (burps) ends, round, under my, back to my bunghole, so I can let it out there if I need to.”
As seen in this photo, the clothing maker seemed to leave LBJ plenty of spare room for his bunghole.
Italian politician Nicole Minetti has quite an interesting story. Originally, she was a showgirl and TV personality. She then changed course quite drastically and decided to go into politics, serving on the Regional Council of the Lombardy Region for two years. She’s also well known for wearing clothing that is…a bit revealing. Especially for a politician.
Melania Trump Tries Casual
We don’t normally see the current First Lady dressed down – she’s been called a fashion icon by some of her fans. But Mrs. Trump decided to go casual to view the Super Bowl in February 2017. Unfortunately, the cute cornflower blue top she chose showed off a lot more than she bargained for – including a dowdy white bra underneath. Oops.
Someone Needs A Better Belt
What we have here is simply an extremely unfortunate situation. We’re not exactly sure how this managed to happen, but this is a picture of Croatian human rights activist Ivan Zvonimir Cicak as his pants fall all the way down to his ankles. If that isn’t bad enough, it happened while he was receiving an award from the nation’s president! Surely no person deserves this kind of public humiliation, especially a human rights activist! We hope that he was able to just laugh this one off and just be happy for the award he is receiving.
Queen Elizabeth Back At It!
Although this may not necessarily be a wardrobe malfunction, it’s a wardrobe fail that definitely could have been avoided. Whether the decision was made by the Queen herself to wear this or her clothing design team, it was a critical error. Nothing says look at me then that blindingly lime green outfit topped with an equally as blinding hat. If there was a green screen behind her, she would be nothing more than a floating head which would be more a little more easy on the eyes than this outfit.
It’s a risky move to step out of a plane onto a windy runway while wearing a skirt any day of the week. It’s even riskier if you’re Ivanka Trump and there are hundreds of cameras waiting for you as you exit, waiting for something to go wrong like this. Even though this malfunction is not as bad as it could have been, the wind still managed to lift her skirt up just enough to be considered revealing. Luckily for her, she managed to avoid a total disaster which would have ended up with her skirt above her waistline.
She appears yet again later on the list.
The Pantsuit Queen
It is no secret that when it comes to pantsuits, Hillary Clinton is usually the first person that comes to mind. They are an essential part of her look, and she’s even managed to bring them back into style for some women. However, when she brings colored ones such as these out of the closet, it’s hard to call them anything but a malfunction. We think it’s best to stick with the black and white look because wearing colors such as this can make it hard to take anybody seriously.
Elena Udrea Can’t Put Them Away!
As we’ve already seen, the once Romanian politician Ellena Udrea has no problem letting her cleavage make a statement for her. This has not been the first time that other politicians, as well as citizens, have complained about how it appears that she’s using her breasts in order to sway voters. it was mentioned by voter Emil Stolojan that, “She certainly knows how to connect with the electorate, the males one’s anyway”. But hey, whatever floats your boat. We’re pretty sure that there isn’t a law against this.
Playing With Fire
Well, it’s clear from this picture that Ivanka Trump is certainly playing with fire with this choice of outfit. One wrong move and we could have a Janet Jackson situation on our hands, but this time it’s the president’s daughter as well as one of his own advisors. Now would be the time to stop wearing clothing like this entirely, or else people would have a feeding-frenzy if something were to go totally wrong with an outfit like this. Her everyone move has been under the microscope so a wardrobe malfunction any more than this could be a tragedy.
This is a picture taken of Sarah Palin while she is attending an NBA game in Phoenix, Arizona back in 2013. Certainly being a politician does not mean you always have to be dressed to the nine, especially while you’re out enjoying yourself, but we don’t think to wear a fast-food t-shirt is necessarily okay either. Although the previous year she had spoken out in support of the fast-food chain’s opposition to same-sex marriage, people spoke out against the picture saying that she looks “tacky” and “extremely unprofessional” to be taken seriously as a politician.
This unfortunate teenager had a major wardrobe malfunction while in front of the deputy PM Nick Clegg while attempting to get a selfie of the two of them. Probably not what either of them expected to happen that day when they both woke up that morning but there’s nothing that can be done about it now. The deputy PM look reassuring, the boy looks embarrassed, and the man across from him looks annoyed more than anything. It would be one thing if this was a joke but by the looks of it this is not what the teen wanted to happen.
Apparently, Barney Frank, a former United States politician has never been known for dressing well, even before making public speeches. This is obvious from this picture, and even though he halfway adorned a jacket to spruce up a little bit, it was a futile attempt. We can still see is nipples clear as day through his baby blue t-shirt as he stands at the podium to make his statement. However, if he’s never been known for making a fashion statement, something tells us he didn’ care about this picture all that much. More power to you Barney.
Not Sure What’s Going On Here
During a diplomatic meeting in 2014, Cultural Affairs minister T.B. Ekanayake was caught wearing bottomless shoes. He went on to explain that he was aware of the malfunction and that there was nothing he could do about it. He wanted to wear the white shoes to match his traditional gown and though they were in better condition than they actually were. With no time to get another pair of shoes, he proceeded to attend the meeting with his shoes the way they were. It sounds like a decent explanation but a true wardrobe malfunction nonetheless.
Palin Gets A Lot Of Male Attention
Yet again, we have another wardrobe situation that may not necessarily be a malfunction more than it was a mistake to decide to wear to such an event. Something tells us that before making a political speech, wearing a tight leather skirt may not be the best idea, especially if you have to walk upstairs next to a bunch of young men. By the looks of the men gawking and taking photographs on the side, we don’t think they’re just extremely excited to see a political idol of their’s, but what she’s wearing certainly might have something to do with it.
Originally, the photographer that snapped this photograph was attempting to show how much the politician Cyprian Awiti was aging, but clearly got more than they bargained for. If you look at the bottom half of the picture, you’ll be able to see exactly what we’re talking about. Well, it’s really hard to miss if you catch our drift. Some might call this a wardrobe malfunction while others might say this is a clear display of manhood done on purpose to prove a point. Either way, this is quite the picture. Also, can we talk about all of the water bottles on the floor?
Obama Gets Frisky
In May 2017, Obama made an appearance along with a speech about climate change in Milan at the Milan Seeds & Chips: Global Food Innovation Summit. But apparently, the earth wasn’t the only topic discussed that was heating up. Obama made his speech and in rather casual attire not just without a tie but with three of his buttons undone. This could have been due to a variety of reasons. Was it a little too hot in Milan, did he not know, or did he just not care at all? No matter what the reason, we think most of us can agree this isn’t his worst look yet.
If you couldn’t tell what the wardrobe malfunction here was at first glance, we’ll give you a hint. It’s Donald Trumps tie. There really doesn’t seem to be an excuse for why anyone would wear a tie like that unless it’s a fundraiser or an awareness thing. By the looks of it, Oprah doesn’t even really want to be documented next to Trump wearing a tie like that. It’s brighter than the sun, and she probably has been blinded by it already. All we hope is that he wore that tie for a certain reason and that it wasn’t for fashion purposes.
Somebody Turn On The AC!
No, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls didn’t just jump into a pool before he took this picture, he had just finished up his business reforms speech. Wow, that’s a lot of sweat! He really must have been under some serious pressure during that speech, or the room was over 100 degrees! That really must have been an embarrassing and uncomfortable situation to be in, and we hope that he got to take a long hot shower directly after he had finished his speech. Maybe next time he has to make a speech he’ll be sure to wear an undershirt.
The Poncho Struggle
By the looks of it, it seems that ex-president George Bush had a rather difficult time figuring out the correct way to wear a rain poncho during President Trump’s inauguration. Apparently, he had never worn one before and this was a bad time to have to figure it out. It’s ok though, when interviewed by Ellen Degeneres about it, he took it light-heartedly and knew just how foolish he must have looked. He still looked like he managed to improvise, adapt, and overcome in order to keep the rain off of him that day.
Gotta Watch Out For Temperature Drops
In 2017, first daughter Ivanka had an unexpected and quite embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. The gaffe, which took place at the White House, left her exposing much more than she was comfortable with. Once she realized that the cold room had caused her nipples to grow hard and become visible through her blouse, Ivanka covered her chest with her arms.
There really is no telling how many pairs of khaki jumpsuits Kim Jong-Il once had in his closet. It was basically the only thing anyone ever saw him wearing. It was okay at first, but after a certain point, it managed to turn into a wardrobe fail because you would think that he would eventually get sick of wearing the same thing every day of your life. But no, not this guy khaki jumpsuits for life! When you’re the leader of a country you’d think that you would take advantage of your power and wear anything that you want.
