After The Bodyguard became a huge hit in 1992, the studio was hungry for a sequel. To quench their appetite, they began developing a story and almost nabbed a surprising face to star alongside Kevin Costner. The studio's top choice for the female lead was Princess Diana.

Costner originally revealed this fascinating piece of trivia in 2012, but recently talked more in-depth about his conversation with her and why it never happened. He was working on the script when he called her, "I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, she goes, 'Are we going to have like a kissing scene?' She said it in a very respectful way. She was nervous because her life was very governed."

So what happened? Sadly, Kevin Costner's conversation with Princess Diana happened in 1997, just before she tragically passed away in a car accident. If she had survived, the plot of the sequel would have been similar to the first one.

According to Costner, "The studio liked the idea of doing The Bodyguard 2, in the same kind of capacity as Whitney. Nobody really knew that for about a year." After The Bodyguard 2 had its development suddenly halted, it never found its way back on track.
