The public loves to follow the lives of their favorite celebrities and are intrigued to see what celebrities’ lives are like outside of their careers. Perhaps it’s because people like to see that celebrities are just like normal people.
Like normal people, celebrities do tend to get a little crazy and when we say crazy, we mean full-blown meltdown. When celebrities act strange in the public eye, everyone eats it up. No matter how shocking the situation is, fans can’t seem to look away from what is happening to their favorite singer or actor. From Amanda Bynes to the late George Michael, we’ve gathered some of the biggest celebrity meltdowns that will show you these people aren’t perfect.
Tom Cruise was at the height of his acting career by 2005, which is the same year he was set to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The audience went wild with excitement as Cruise walked onto Oprah’s stage, but little did everyone know, Cruise would be the most excited in that studio. As his interview with Oprah progressed, Cruise became overwhelmed with happiness after she asked about his new relationship with then-girlfriend Katie Holmes.
His expression of love for her was displayed by an awkward series of fist pumps, kneeling on the floor, and couch jumping. Oprah was so shocked, she said, “He’s gone. He’s gone. The boy is gone!” The incident marked the first instance of Cruise “going off the rails,” as he has since become less famous for his movies and more known as an advocate for the controversial Church of Scientology.
Throughout the ’90s, Mariah Carey had built up a reputation as one of the top pop divas on the radio. But by 2001 she was working so hard, she allegedly suffered a physical and emotional breakdown. In addition to pressures from her career and the public, she had also gone through a breakup with her then-boyfriend of three years, singer Luis Miguel. Around this time, she began to post cryptic and concerning messages on her website such as, “I’m trying to understand things in life right now and so I really don’t feel that I should be doing music right now.”
That same year, she made a surprise appearance on MTV’s Total Request Live, interrupting the show by walking out in an oversized shirt and wheeling around an ice cream cart. Host Carson Daly was visibly shocked as he apparently had no idea Carey would appear, but he rolled with the punches as she proceeded to pass out ice cream to the audience and strip, revealing short shorts and a halter top. It became one of the most popular moments in TRL history, but just days later Mariah Carey was suddenly hospitalized for “extreme exhaustion.”
Also super famous in the ’90s, comedian Martin Lawrence had established a successful career as a lead actor, with movies such as Bad Boys and A Thin Line Between Love & Hate, and also was popular for his television show, Martin. But in 1996, he too suffered a public meltdown when he was spotted in the middle of an intersection on the busy Ventura Boulevard in the Lost Angeles area.
He was behaving erratically and had a loaded handgun on his person, yelling “Fight the establishment!” and “They’re trying to kill me!” at passing cars. Police eventually detained him and he was soon hospitalized on the grounds of suffering “complete exhaustion and dehydration.”
Amanda Bynes rose to prominence in the late ’90s as a Nickelodeon child star on All That, which led to her having her own show, The Amanda Show. After The Amanda Show, Bynes went on to star in a series of successful movies throughout the early 2000s. But after her last film appearance in Easy A in 2010, Bynes retired then “unretired” from acting, finally saying that she was taking a break from the profession that she was “no longer in love with.”
Fast forward a few years, Bynes gained media attention for a series of DUIs. In 2013, she was arrested for criminal possession of marijuana and tampering of evidence, when she allegedly threw a bong out of the window of her 36th-floor apartment, claiming that is was a vase. Months later, she was arrested for starting a fire in a neighbor’s driveway, after which she was hospitalized and put under mental-health evaluation. Bynes’ antics haven’t really been explained, but she has since been recovering and as of 2014 was enrolled and attending school at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.
Basketball player Lamar Odom had built himself a successful basketball career by the time he was on the roster for the Los Angeles Lakers. During this time, he met and married Khloé Kardashian after a month of dating in 2009. As a consequence of that, he became heavily involved in the world of reality television, as their whirlwind romance was eaten up by the public when their wedding was aired on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, sparking a spin-off series Khloé & Lamar.
During this time, Odom was hiding a substance and alcohol abuse problem that only continued to get worse. After confirmed rumors of his affairs with numerous women and DUI charges, Kardashian filed for divorce in 2013. The same year, Odom was seen throwing a paparazzi’s camera equipment onto the street and bashing another’s car. In 2015, Odom was found unconscious at a brothel in Nevada and was hospitalized and placed on life support after going into a coma. He claimed he was going through a dark time mentally, which led him to act erratically. As of 2016, the divorce from Kardashian was finalized and Odom is on the road to recovery.
R&B singer Chris Brown was infamous in 2009 for a physical altercation with his then-girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna. A picture of Rihanna’s battered face was leaked as Brown was charged with felony assault. He pleaded guilty and publicly apologized for his actions. He was sentenced to probation and community service, in addition to a restraining order that required him to stay away from Rihanna.
Two years later, he had tried to leave all that behind and promote his new album F.A.M.E. with an appearance on Good Morning America in 2011. During the interview, co-anchor Robin Roberts asked him about the restraining order, which at that point had been relaxed, and about the altercation in 2009. He tried to brush it off and change the topic, saying, “It’s not really a big deal to me now as far as that situation. I think I’m past that in my life. I think today’s the album day so that’s what I’m focused on. Everybody go get that album.” Still, Roberts pressed on, despite Brown becoming visibly agitated. After he performed a song off his album, Brown reportedly stormed off the stage and went straight to his dressing room. Authorities were called after they heard loud noises coming from the room and discovered a broken window after Brown had left. Meanwhile, Brown was spotted shirtless and roaming the streets of Manhattan.
Even Stevens actor Shia LaBeouf shed his Disney star persona and went on to more serious film roles as an adult. But his new “serious” fame did not come without some consequences along the way. In 2014, LaBeouf was kicked out of New York’s Studio 54 theater after he was reportedly yelling loudly during a performance of “Cabaret.” When police came to escort LaBeouf out of the theater, he reportedly said, “Do you know my life? Do you know who the [expletive] I am? Do you know who I am?”
When detained at the police station, he allegedly spat at officers and cursed at them. He was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing for the scene he caused at Studio 54 that night. After the incident, he reportedly voluntarily began going to outpatient alcohol treatment. This was the same year that LaBeouf was known to get in numerous bar brawls and even showed up to a red carpet event with a paper bag over his head that read “I Am Not Famous Anymore.”
Charlie Sheen is one actor whose personal struggles were constantly in the press. According to a comprehensive report from The Washington Post, it all started in 2010, when Sheen was arrested and pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges against his then-wife, Brooke Mueller. That is the same year he was allegedly under the influence of drugs when he trashed a room at New York City’s Plaza Hotel and got into two lawsuits involving a porn star.
After being admitted to rehab, Two and a Half Men, on which Sheen is one of the lead actors, went on hiatus so that he could complete his program. During his stint in rehab, Charlie Sheen participated in numerous radio interviews over the phone, at one point even bashing Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre. Because of this and other brash statements he made by dragging the show, for which he was earning $2 million per episode, CBS fired Sheen. He subsequently went off the deep end and went on more interviews, saying that he has “tiger blood” and that the only thing he was addicted to was “winning.” After the height of all his antics, Sheen revealed in 2015 that he was HIV positive and had been diagnosed four years earlier.
Our favorite pop singer of the new millennium is popular for hits like “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!… I Did It Again,” but she became even more popular for the meltdown she had back in 2007. After famously kissing Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards and releasing her fourth album, In The Zone, Britney Spears proved to her fans that she really was not that innocent. Britney was apparently at her lowest low by 2007, after she divorced Kevin Federline and got into an intense custody battle over their two sons.
Around that time, she was seen going commando in the L.A. club scene, getting tattoos, and she shocked the world when pictures of her shaving her head surfaced. After all of this went down, she was seen attacking a paparazzi’s car with an umbrella. Shortly thereafter, she checked herself into rehab and also lost custody of her sons that year. But perhaps even more famous than her meltdown is the way in which she bounced back. In recent years, she appears to be in better health, having released new music, being a judge on The X Factor, and having an on-going residency show in Las Vegas.
Justin Bieber rose to prominence as a young teenager and quickly became a heartthrob for teens all over the world. But coming of age under the spotlight does come with consequences. Although his mentors tried to guide him and control his public image, Bieber still grew into a trouble-causing young adult by his late teens. After cases of reckless driving and vandalism, Bieber was accused of causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to a neighbor’s home, which included throwing eggs in 2014. The same year, he was arrested in Miami under DUI charges, admitting to consumption of drugs and alcohol.
The same year, he found himself in hot water when videos of his younger self, making racial slurs, had surfaced. In 2016, he walked off the stage in the middle of a performance but later said that it was because his fans would not stop screaming when he was performing or trying to speak to them.
As if he couldn’t stir up any more controversy for himself, Kanye West proved just how far he could go in November 2016 during a concert in Sacramento, California for his The Life of Pablo tour. After just three songs, he proceeded to go on a rant that lasted for at least 15 minutes. In his rant he mentioned his dismay at why the radio only plays what’s popular, he “bashed” Beyoncé for reportedly refusing to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards unless she won Video of the Year, he accused Jay-Z of refusing to talk to him and urged him not to send “hitters” for his head, and he even expressed support for Donald Trump.
After the speech, he left the stage and angered the audience, who had waited over an hour for him to start the concert. After the incident, he canceled another concert, which was only scheduled because he missed the original date due to wife Kim Kardashian’s Paris robbery. He was soon hospitalized in Los Angeles due to extreme exhaustion and dehydration. Needless to say, the remaining 21 dates of his tour were canceled as well.
The child actress who charmed us with her dual-role in The Parent Trap had a growing acting career by the time she started finding herself in the public eye due to her troubles with the law. She found herself in and out of both the courtroom and rehab after numerous cases of driving under the influence and driving recklessly. After violating the terms of her probation, she was devastated upon receiving a 90-day jail sentence.
In 2016 she apparently had another tumultuous year, getting out of an abusive relationship with Russian businessman Egor Tarabasov and even losing her finger in a freak boating accident. In late 2016 she opened a nightclub in Greece bearing her name, called LOHAN, but even that caused another meltdown. She yelled “shut the [expletive] up” at the crowd in the club after they were ignoring her and would not let her speak. The embarrassing incident ended when she told the DJ to shut the whole thing down.
Once one-half of Wham! and later forging a successful solo career, British singer George Michael has had his fair share of driving meltdowns in the past. In 2006, he was found slumped over the wheel of his car in the middle of traffic on two occasions. Also that year, he hit three parked cars while trying to maneuver out of a parking space. During those instances, he had pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs.
In 2010, he crashed his car into a storefront in London, while driving under the influence of prescription drugs and marijuana. Because of that and his previous convictions, he was sentenced to jail. Unfortunately, on Christmas Day in 2016, he was found dead at his home in England. Although the exact cause of death is uncertain, sources say that he passed due to heart failure.
The Icelandic singer is famous for her odd and experimental ways but has been the recipient of numerous music awards, as well as nominations for the Grammy’s, the Oscars, and the Golden Globes. Needless to say, her outlandish demeanor and art have brought her plenty of success. But back in the late ’90s, when she was rising to prominence, she had a meltdown of her own.
She was constantly followed by the press and paparazzi at the time and one day she had had it. Upon arriving at Bangkok International Airport with her son, there were already reporters and press present, even though she had requested that she be left alone until a scheduled press conference. When reporter Julie Kaufman asked Björk about her son, Björk attacked Kaufman and knocked her to the ground. Kaufman was shocked but did not involve the authorities in the altercation. Björk’s representatives responded to the incident, saying that Kaufman had been hounding her for four days straight.
In 2008, English actor Christian Bale was in New Mexico filming for the movie Terminator Salvation. It was during this time that he infamously went on a profane angry tirade, the audio of which was released to the public. Bale can be heard yelling at the movie’s Director of Photography, Shane Hurlbut, after he allegedly walked on set during a scene and ruined Bale’s concentration.
Hurlbut can be heard apologizing to Bale, who responds by yelling, “Don’t be sorry, think for one [expletive] second. What the [expletive] are you doing? … for [expletive] sake man you’re an amateur.” Bale reportedly threatened to quit the movie if Hurlbut wasn’t fired. Since the audio was released, the internet took the liberty of having fun with it, turning it into songs and other jokes. Bale apologized a week later, saying that he and Hurlbut worked things out shortly after the incident went down.
In 2009, the Passion of the Christ actor had a love child with then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. By 2010, they had separated and what ensued was a highly publicized falling-out between the two. Grigorieva filed a restraining order against Gibson, which barred him from coming near her and their daughter. The pair then got into a heated custody battle over their daughter.
During this time, Gibson was also accused of domestic violence. Audio recordings of his phone conversations with Grigorieva were released and the public was exposed to the type of man that Gibson was towards the mother of his child. He criticized the way she looked, said he didn’t love her anymore, threatened to burn down her house after he forced her to perform an explicit act on him, and even said that if she got raped then it would be her fault. The world was shocked after hearing these recordings.
Robert Downey, Jr.
Before he found phenomenal success as Iron Man and as part of the subsequent Avengers films, Robert Downey, Jr.’s drug addiction and abuse were widely known by the public in the late ’90s and early 2000s. He was arrested on multiple occasions for possession of illegal drugs and after missing multiple drug testings, he was sentenced to three years in California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, where he served one year.
Following his release, he was arrested again in 2000 when he was found in his hotel room in Palm Springs under the influence of a controlled substance and being in possession of cocaine and valium. A year later in 2001, police found him in Los Angeles walking barefoot and he was arrested on the suspicion of being under the influence. He was dropped from his film and television projects at that time. Since then he has cleaned up and has successfully revamped his acting career. However, in 2015, he walked out of an interview with a British reporter after the reporter insisted on talking about his past drug use when Downey was only there to discuss the latest Avengers installation.
Actor Alec Baldwin is already known for having a fiery temper sometimes. In 2011, there were many witnesses to this when he was kicked off of an American Airlines flight for refusing to cooperate with the flight attendant’s request that he turn off his devices. After being kicked off the flight, Baldwin took to Twitter to rant about his dismay and said, “Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving.”
According to other sources, Baldwin was being difficult from the start when he was asked three times to turn off his device. He allegedly slammed the bathroom door on the plane so loudly that the plane had to stop and re-dock at the gate. Baldwin allegedly didn’t leave without a fight but was eventually taken off the plane and put on another flight. His representative said, “Alec was asked to leave the flight for playing Words with Friends while parked at the gate. He loves WWF so much that he was willing to leave a plane for it, but he has already boarded another AA flight.”
Pop singer Christina Aguilera was known as the anti-Britney Spears at the height of both of their popularities. Some will say she certainly has more of a talented voice and has had a few successful hit songs, but many of her albums were flops. After separating from her first husband, she sort of began her descent into meltdown mode.
Not only did she flub the U.S. National Anthem at the Super Bowl XLV, she almost fell off stage after her performance at the Grammy’s that same year. The trip fueled suspicions of a drinking problem as rumors of her drunken behavior at numerous events had surfaced; she even allegedly attacked a co-star at a party. She was arrested for public drunkenness in 2011. Since then she has tried to make a comeback and was a judge on The Voice for four seasons.
High on Life
Oh, Mariah! The grandest diva of them all, Mariah Carey, had yet another meltdown on New Year’s Eve in 2016. She was set to perform a medley of songs at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest to help ring in 2017. First, she lip synced a rendition of “Auld Lang Syne.” Next, she bombed her way through her 1990s hit “Emotions.” At one point Carey stopped trying altogether and complained that she couldn’t hear the song (although the backup dancers continued without a hitch and her recorded voice continued to sing in the background). Inexplicably, her team later accused Dick Clark Productions of setting up the disaster in order to boost their ratings.
Days prior to the disastrous performance, Carey was seen purchasing some high-quality bud at a legal marijuana dispensary in Aspen, Colorado. She wore an evening gown for the transaction and selected a product that retails for $400 per ounce. Is it possible that an indulgence in pot could have been responsible for Carey’s NYE meltdown?
