Recently, the internet collectively began to notice that Prince George and Princess Charlotte look as though they’ve stepped out of the annals of time, more specifically from the 1940s era. While it certainly seems as though the British family have a particular set of rules and traditions when it comes to wardrobe, the same can’t be said for royalty around the world. Check out this list of royals, then and now!
Prince William is the eldest son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. He is line to one day ascend to the throne of King. Prince William has been in the public eye since he was born and as a young lad was often the mark of admiration from young girls around the world. With his blonde hair and blue eyes, young William could have definitely held is own against other teen heart throbs of the time. Of course, as William aged so did his looks and he ultimately settled down with a beautiful commoner named Kate Middleton. William is now very active in public life, seemingly readying himself for duties when he is older. He also often speaks about his late mother, Princess Diana.
Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, is the wife of Prince William and the mother of Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Kate is considered a commoner although she was brought up in an upper middle-class family who has been known to hobnob with British royals since the early 1900s. Kate first met and began dating William in 2001 at the University of St. Andrews. Back then Kate dressed as a totally normal girl of that era. The two married in 2011, and many people tuned in from around the world just at they did for the marriage of Charles and Diana. Since then, Kate’s style as morphed into a very polished look common to that of British royals including skirt sets, hats and heels.
Prince Harry is William’s “wild-child” younger brother. Well, he was known to be a bit wild in his younger days anyway. He was quite young when his mother was tragically killed in a car accident and he has recently spoken about how tremendously her death affected him. Harry even recently spoke about the fact that he saw a therapist in order to deal with her death, which is quite a rare concession for a member of the royal family. He has also publicly carried on his mother’s philanthropy. Harry and William recently produced a documentary of their mother called “Our Mother, Diana”. Since his younger wilder days, Harry has settled down tremendously and is currently seriously dating the American actress Meghan Markle.
Prince Charles is the father of William and Harry and the son of the Queen. He is in the direct line of succession and will become King of England when his mother dies. This is quite notable as there has not been a King in England for quite some time. Charles was famously married to Princess Diana who is still loved tremendously around the world. His relationship with Camilla, his now wife, was said to be a source of contention between the two throughout their marriage. Oddly enough, if you look at photos from Charles’ childhood he is dressed almost exactly like his grandson Prince George. Those royals certainly have a style!
Queen Elizabeth II has been the Queen of England for almost her entire adult life, having taken the reign in 1952 when she was 26 years old. Queen Elizabeth has the longest reign of any Queen ever before even surpassing her great-grandmother Victoria. Elizabeth has presented much of the same tailored proper image since her childhood days, never once deviating. Although, her public attitude has relaxed over the years somewhat, especially after the life and death of her daughter-in-law Diana who was dubbed “The People’s Princess”. The Queen is now 90 years old and apparently has no intention on abdicating the throne anytime soon.
Beautiful Princess Margaret was the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth. Margaret earned a much more “scandalous” reputation than her older sister which included extramarital affairs and chain smoking. There were even rumors that Margaret had affairs with Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger, American actor Warren Beatty and comedic actor Peter Sellers, although they have not been substantiated thus far. Margaret was also known for being quite witty and even sarcastic. Famed writer Gore Vidal once described her as being “far too intelligent for her station in life”. Ultimately, her smoking ended up causing her great harm. She withstood pneumonia, multiple strokes and other lung issues, even ultimately having one lung removed before her eventual death in 2002 at age 71.
Prince Phillip is husband of Queen Elizabeth, spouses of the King or Queen are given the title of Prince or Princess, respectively. He was actually born in Greece but his family was exiled when he was very young and ended up settling in other parts of Europe. While still a boy, he was sent away to school and his mother was later diagnosed with schizophrenia and sent to an asylum. He rarely interacted with her for the rest of his life. Prince Phillip was born into royalty however in the Greek and Danish royal families, although he abdicated those titles upon becoming engaged to Elizabeth. Over the years Phillip has been known to enjoy a variety of sports like yachting, polo and carriage driving. He is also apparently a talented oil painter and recently retired from his duties as royal consort at the ripe old age of 96.
Perhaps the most famous and certainly the most loved of all British royals is the now legendary Princess Diana. Princess Diana was the wife to Charles and mother to future King William and his younger brother Prince Harry. She is also the grandmother of Charlotte and George although she never got to meet the two. Diana was born into nobility and had royal ancestry but she seemed to prefer a simpler life. She worked in a series of low paying jobs before meeting Charles including as a nanny, a dance instructor and a preschool assistant. Her two sons recently completed a documentary in her honor, where William revealed that he keeps his mother’s memory alive by sharing stories of her with his children and also keeping photos of her around their home. Internationally, Princess Diana is remembered for her philanthropy her generous work with the victims of AIDS and landmines and many others in need.
Did you know that the President of France is technically the Prince of Andorra? Neither did we, but it earned current French President Emmanuel Macron a spot on this list. Andorra is a micro-state that lies between France and Spain. Emmanuel studied philosophy in college before becoming a public servant and an investment banker. While in high school he met his future wife while she was his teacher, in a very Mary Kay Letourneau Villi Fualaau situation. His parents attempted to stop the relationship by sending him to Paris, but were unsuccessful at thwarting the relationship. His wife Brigitte Trogneux was married at the time with three children. Emmanuel was only 15 years old. The two married in 2007 and 10 years later he became the President of France.

At the relatively young age of 52, Princess Grace suffered a stroke which caused her to have a car accident and she passed away a few days later.
Unlike her grandmother Princess Grace, Charlotte Casiraghi was born into royalty and has thus lived a life or privilege. Like her grandmother, however, Charlotte has also been noted for her stunning beauty since she was a young girl. Charlotte is the eight in line to the throne of Monaco. She is known for being a professional equestrian. Unbeknownst to many, Charlotte is also a journalist and has worked as both an editor and writer. She has remained largely out of the spotlight and is unmarried although she gave birth to a son named Raphaël Elmaleh in 2013 with standup comedian Gad Elmaleh.
Queen Rania is known for her beauty but also for her public role in society as the Queen of a Middle Eastern country. Before meeting her future husband who was a Prince at the time, she worked for both Apple and CitiBank in marketing. Despite being royalty, she met her husband in a very normal kind of way. She reportedly met Prince Abdullah bin Al-Hussein at a dinner party. The two became engaged and married soon after meeting. Later, Prince Abdullah ascended to the role of King and Rania was given the title of Queen. Quite a long way to go from working in marketing to a literal Queen!

Rather than seek out a love interest with similar royal ties, Princess Madeleine married a normal guy. She married a British-born American financier named Christopher O’Neill and the two share two children together, both of whom hold royal titles.
Kim Jong Un
Kim Jon Un became the leader of North Korea after the death of his father Kim Jong-il in 2011. He is known to be quite young, although much of his life has been kept extremely private. Although he was not his father’s eldest son, the rumors have said that his father chose him because of his personality which was said to be much like his much maligned father. Both father and son have been known to have extremely harsh policies which have even been said to include the murder of their own family members. In recent time, Kim Jong Un has continuously been said to test nuclear weapons which has garnered criticism nationally. Also, an extremely random fact about Kim is that he has stuck up a friendship with American former NBA basketball player Dennis Rodman.
Princess Mary of Denmark
Princess Mary of Denmark is perhaps the most recent real-life tale of a common person ascending to royalty. She was born to upper middle class Scottish parents in Australia, who seemingly have no royal ties. She met Prince Frederik, her future husband, at a pub in Sydney while he was attending the Olympics in 2000. Prince George is the song of Prince William and Princess Kate and the great-grandson of the Queen of England. He is in line to one day inherit the throne himself, so this little guy certainly has some big shoes to fill. Some stealthy eyed purveyors across the Internet have noticed that it seems as though George’s royal parents enjoy dressing him like a child from the 1940s. From the sweater, shorts and knee socks combo, it does seem as though he stepped out from another time. Here, we see George’s grandfather Prince Charles on the left as a young man. George is pictured today on the right.
Princess Charlotte is Prince George’s baby sister, and seems to be the absolute apple of her parents’ eyes. Like her big brother, Kate and William seem to take a nod from the old school and dress Charlotte to the nines in simple dresses, sweaters, Mary Jane shoes and always a barrette in her hair. In fact, if you look at photos of the whole family, include Charlotte and George’s family it seems to be a running standard to keep the children dressed traditionally. It wouldn’t be surprising to find out that there are actual rules regarding the dress code within the British royal family. Of course, just like her big brother, she is cute enough to pull it off! We can’t wait to see if she ends up looking like her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth (pictured on the right).
