Martin Scorsese Continues To Attack Marvel Movies

The famous director has had a lot to say recently about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Earlier this month he said that Marvel films are "not cinema." He continues to share his thoughts and feelings on the films, which he seems to think do not have a "narrative."

"It's not cinema, it’s something else. We shouldn’t be invaded by it. We need cinemas to step up and show films that are narrative films," the Oscar-winning director told BFI London Film Festival on October 13th while promoting his new film The Irishman.

He also compared the big box office movies to amusement parks.

"Theaters have become amusement parks. That is fine and good for those who enjoy that type of film and, by the way, knowing what goes into them now, I admire what they do," Scorsese told BAFTA's David Lean lecture. "It's not my kind of thing, it simply is not. It’s creating another kind of audience that thinks cinema is that."

A few of Marvel's actors and directors have responded to his various comments bashing the franchise. Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in many Marvel films, said not all moviegoers are fans of Scorsese's films either. James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, tweeted that he is "saddened" by Scorsese's comments.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. What we don't understand is how you could call the biggest box office opening ever, Avengers: Endgame, "not cinema." Marvel is clearly doing something right and fans love them for it.
