Jayne Mansfield was one of the of America’s biggest objects of desire in the 1950s and early ’60s. The actress, singer and Playboy pin-up charmed audiences on film, television, and magazine spreads until her death at the young age of 34 in a car crash.
Born Vera Jayne Palmer on April 9, 1933, in Bryn Mawr, Penn., Jayne was an only child. Her father was of German and English descent while her mother had English ancestry. She grew up in New Jersey where her father practiced law.
After Jayne’s father died of a heart attack, her mother married a sales engineer named Harry Lawrence Peers in 1939. Jayne became Vera Jayne Peers, and the three of them moved to Dallas, Texas.
