The violent, gruesome, and generally dangerous nature of many popular video games typically remains on the screen and out of real life. However, every once in a while gamers die, are murdered, or become murderers because of their gaming obsession. From children who suffer from malnutrition caused by their parents’ prolonged gaming sessions, to gamers who flip out and lose their minds because of the violent games they play, these are some of the most gruesome and troubling deaths ever caused by video games.
This Gamer Didn’t Know When To Call it Quits
Cause Of Death: Prolonged Malnutrition.
In 2010 a man grew hopelessly depressed after his wife gave birth to a premature infant. It’s apparently very taboo to give birth to a premature baby in their country. Both of the parents were shunned and lost their jobs. They turned to the internet for comfort. They would often spend upwards of 12 hours each day playing a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing) game called “Prius Online.” They started raising a virtual baby online and completely forgot about their actual child. The poor infant eventually died from prolonged malnutrition.
He Just Dropped Dead
Cause Of Death: Exhaustion.
In 2007 a Chinese man was playing a non-disclosed game on the internet when he suddenly dropped dead. The man allegedly checked into an internet cafe and started on a 72 hour period of consecutive gaming. Forcing yourself to stay awake for three days straight can cause the body to start shutting down. Witnesses at the cafe claimed that the man was sitting at a computer when he suddenly fell over and died.

In 2007, teenager Daniel Petric lost his damn mind when his addiction to “Halo 3” was halted by his parents. Mom and dad took away his copy of the popular first person shooter and he wasn’t happy. Daniel walked over to the family’s gun safe, removed a 9mm pistol and approached his parents bedroom. He told his parents to close their eyes because he had a present for them. He shot both his mom and dad in the head. His mother tragically died but his father survived.

Cause Of Death: Gunshot.
In 2003, Devin Moore stole a police car and opened fire on the police officers who were in pursuit of the vehicle. He killed three officers before he was apprehended. When he was caught he confessed, “Life’s like a video game. You’ve got to die sometime.” During his defense he claimed that his ability to discern video games from real life had been lost because of his obsession. He is now sitting on Alabama’s death row.
His Heart Couldn’t Handle His Obsession

Lee Seung Seop of South Korea died in 2005 after prolonged gameplay. Seop became hopelessly addicted to Blizzard’s “StarCraft” and quit his job to focus full-time on the addictive game. He visited a run-down internet cafe where he started to play the game for 50 hours straight. During the 40 hour period he collapsed from exhaustion and dehydration. His heart couldn’t handle the stress it was put under, and he died shortly after.
The World’s Worst FarmVille Player And Mother
Cause Of Death: Parental Abuse.
We’re not really sure how any parent could play “Farmville” for more than 20 minutes let alone hours and even days at a time. That’s exactly what happened in October 2010 when Alexandra Tobias developed a crippling addiction to the then-popular game. Tobias was interrupted from her gaming marathon by her hungry and crying baby. She walked over to her three-year old son and proceeded to shake him to death. She was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
A Spiritual Sacrifice?

Darius Johnson was involved in one of the most grisly video game murders on record. In April, 2013, the Florida resident allegedly used an Xbox 360 console to bludgeon his girlfriend to death. He claimed that she had grabbed control of his spirit and he used his gaming console to kill her and reclaim his life. This is the only murder on our list that actually involves the use of a gaming console to kill someone.
Halo And A Blood Clot
Cause Of Death: Pulmonary Embolism.
You shouldn’t remain in a seated position for long periods of time. It’s bad for your health and can cause major issues to the body. Chris Staniforth was known for playing “Halo” for incredibly long periods of time. For two to three times each week he would engage in 12 hour non-stop gaming sessions. In August of 2011, he played in his longest marathon ever. During gameplay, a blood clot moved from his legs to his lungs. He died instantly. His deep vein thrombosis and long periods of sitting were blamed on his death.
The Nintendo Wii Water Death
Cause Of Death: Water Intoxication.
A radio station in Sacramento was holding a giveaway for the Nintendo Wii, right at the height of its popularity. Jennifer Strange was one of the people waiting in line for a chance to win the gaming console. The station held a contests titled “Hold Your Wee for a Wii.” She held her urine for as long as possible which lead to water intoxication. She was killed because of the stunt and the radio station was fined $16 million.
Gaming Addiction Existed In The 1980s
Cause Of Death: Cardiac Arrest.
In the 1980s it wasn’t just about “Pac-Man” and “Asteroid.” There was another popular game called “Berzerk,” and it claimed the lives of two men in exactly the same way. Jeff Dailey and Peter Burkowski both entered high scores of 16,660 points at arcades on opposite sides of the country. Immediately after entering their names in the high score box they dropped dead.

Some people become so enthralled and obsessed with their video games that they go to extreme measures to immerse themselves in the game. This fact has never been more true than the story of Zhang Xiaoyi. In 2004, he decided to jump to his death from the top of a 24 story building. He decided he wanted to wait for his “WoW” friends in the afterlife.
The Shanghai Video Game Killer
Cause Of Death: Stabbed To Death.
Chinese gamer Zhu Caoyuan was stabbed to death in 2004 by fellow “Legend of Mir 3” gamer Qiu Chengwei. Qiu had recently allowed Zhu to borrow a virtual sword. Zhu took the sword and sold it in an online auction. Qiu found out about the sale and attempted to file a police report. Police told him that the sword didn’t actually exist so there was nothing they could do about the theft. Qiu stabbed Zhu in the heart. He was soon sentenced to death by a Chinese court.
A Manhunt Murder
Cause Of Death: Bludgeoned With A Claw Hammer.
Seventeen year-old Warren Leblanc brutally murdered 14-year-old Stefan Pakeerah with a claw hammer. Pakeerah believed he was friends with Leblanc, which allows the murderer to lure his victim to Stokes Wood Park in Leicester, UK. Leblanc would later claim that he only planned on robbing the young man so he could pay off 75 pounds in debt. However, the victim’s body was found to have 50 separate injuries. The victim’s parents blamed the very popular and extremely violent “Manhunt” video game. The case was so gruesome that Dixons, a huge UK retailer, pulled the game from its store shelves.

Cause Of Death: Suicide.
21-year-old Shawn Woolley committed suicide at his computer. He was found by his mother, Liz Woolley, who claimed that he was depressed because of his addiction. “He shot himself because of the game…He couldn’t stay off it. That’s how strong that game is. You can’t just get up and walk away,” Liz Woolley said. She also believes that another character in the game named “iluvyou” may have rejected her son, which pushed him over the edge. “In the end…the game became his life,” his mother sadly declared.
Grand Theft Auto IV And The 8 Year-Old Murderer

87-year-old Marie Smothers was shot to death by her 8-year-old grandson. Like many of the murderers on our list, the young man was addicted to the popular Rockstar Games shooter, “Grand Theft Auto.” The young man walked up behind his grandma and shot her in the back of the head. “Grand Theft Auto” was banned from some countries and many psychologists have said there is a “direct causal link between video games and violence.” The young boy said the shooting was an accident, although police never bought his story. He wasn’t charged because of his young age.
The Brutal Murder Of A 17-Month-Old Child
Cause Of Death: Family Homicide.
In 2008 you may recall that 28-year-old psychopath Tyrone Spellman beat his 17-month-old daughter to death. He hit her so hard that he caved in her skull. When speaking to police, Spellman said he had become addicted to “Ghost Record” and his infant daughter knocked the Xbox console to the ground, breaking it in the process. He reacted by beating his daughter to death. Spellman fled the house after the murder but was caught and later convicted and sentenced to 47 years in prison.
Twins Die In Bathtub
Cause Of Death: Parental Neglect.
Gregg J. Kleinmark faced 10 years in prison after his gross neglect of 10-month-old fraternal twins, Drew and Bryn. Their dad wanted to play with his Game Boy Advance so he left the infants in the bathtub unsupervised for 30 minutes. The father could have just as easily played his handheld game in the bathroom, but chose to walk away from his children. He claimed to feel guilty for what he had done and tried to kill himself several times.
A $6.20 Murder Over A Gaming Addiction
Cause Of Death: Strangling.
A 13-year-old boy in Vietnam attacked and killed an 81-year-old woman so he could steal her money to play his favorite online game. As if the murder wasn’t tragic enough, the woman had just $6.20 in her purse. The young man strangled the woman with a piece of rope. He then tried burying her her in a pile of sand in front of his house.
An Entire Family Slaughtered
Cause Of Death: Death by Gunfire.
15-year-old Nehemiah Griego was charged with killing both of his parents and his three younger siblings after he became enraged with his mother over his video game addiction. When police discovered the grim scene they said the young man was “unemotional” when talking about the massacre. When asked about his favorite games, including “Modern Warfare” and “Grand Theft Auto,” he perked up and become excited. He planned the murders for at least a week. He also contemplated shooting up a local Walmart and nearly attempted to kill the parents of his 12-year-old girlfriend. He sent the poor girl a picture of his mother’s dead body after he shot her.
14 Mass Murders Linked to Violent Video Games

Our last example of brutal video game killings involves 14 different incidents. Adam Lanza, James Holmes, Jared Lee Loughner, Eric Harris. Those are just several of the names that still make many Americans sick to their stomachs. These young men and 10 others entered America’s schools and movie theaters and killed dozens of innocent men, women and children. The mental illnesses attached to video games have been cited so many times as the cause of mass shootings that some stores around the world have pulled certain game titles from their shelves.
