Confessions Of Hotel Employees: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

hotel11.jpg

Working at a hotel is no walk in the park. Particularly with high end hotels, one might think there is lots of luxury involved… but that is simply not the case. In fact, you often have to deal with the worst kind of people and their horrible manners in nicer hotels. Take a look at real life confessions of hotel staff: the good, the bad, and the ugly! These are the secrets hotels don’t want you to know, as well as some crazy stories about things that have happened to hotel staff around the world.

Kindness Pays

Kindness Pays

Being nice to hotel staff definitely pays off. Other hospitality workers have confessed through the Whisper app about how the nicer guests receive better service. A front desk worker said that if a person is very nice they will give them as much as they are allowed to give which includes better service overall, a better and cleaner room, freebies and other extras. However, if a guest is rude, the reality is a totally different story. Some workers have confessed to the app that they will put mean guests in the worst room of the hotel. Others have said that if a guest is obnoxious they will clean their room only to replace their sheets and towels from a dirty room. Ugh! Sounds like being nice definitely pays off.

How To Get Free Stuff

How To Get Free Stuff

One of the more overlooked jobs at a hotel is a bellman. Bellman are actually more than just a doorman who guides you to your room, which is why you are expected to tip them. However, most people totally overlook the actual reason for the job. For instance, one such worker told CNN, “I’m a bellman and valet at a resort. I can give you free water bottles, tampons, valet parking, tours, shuttle rides, reservations, dry cleaning, hell even an upgrade to a better room if you just ASK ME. But no one ever does because they think I’m just a doorman.”

Free Food = Thumbs Up

Free Food = Thumbs Up

Another great reason to take advantage of your bellman (if you are lucky enough to stay at a hotel with one on duty) is for the food perks! The employee also noted that most of the time, room service is not an all-night service. However, sometimes guests will be checking in at random times and in order to provide extra food they leave pre-made meals (like sandwiches or desserts) in a fridge near the front desk in case a guest wants food. As the employee says, “Anyways in the morning there’s just free food sitting there, every morning I get a free cheesecake if I want, but the guest could have it if he or she asked.”

Ordering Prostitutes Like Pizza?!

Ordering Prostitutes Like Pizza?!

It’s unknown if this next story is true for VIPs in hotels around the world but it certainly wouldn’t be surprising. One employee works in a world class hotel in Hong Kong and said they are definitely expected to go above and beyond for any VIP guests. The employee told CNN, “I work in a five-star hotel located in Central, Hong Kong. Yes, we have to comply with any request if the guest is considered a VIP.” Some of the more salacious requests seem as though they are straight out of a movie. The employee continued, “Not sure if this is interesting to you guys but we do have contact with local triads when prostitution is needed. We simply make a phone call and girls will be delivered faster than pizza.” Um, yes that is pretty interesting, indeed!

That Moment When… A Car Is Actually On Fire

That Moment When… A Car Is Actually On Fire

For some that work in guest services, it is certainly not a boring job. Well, most of the time anyway. In what seemed like a totally normally night at first, Reddit User McJigg was tending to some light cleaning at 3:30am in the hotel lobby. Suddenly there is the sound of screeching coming from a vehicle going by outside. As the employee looks out the window, he notices that there is what is presumably a fire coming from a vehicle’s wheel. The employee runs outside still clutching a broom in order to warn the driver saying, “Your wheel is on fire!”. The two men totally ignore him and he repeats himself. The passenger responded, “in an annoyed voice”, “No it’s not”.

Spitting Will Not Put Out A Fire

At this point, smoke has swirled around the vehicle and is going inside the window. They get out and begin freaking out that their car is actually on fire. The passenger gets out and seeing the flames begins spitting on them, putting them out momentarily before they reignite and then he blows it out. The passenger then gets in the driver’s seat and drives off like a madman. It turns out that the vehicle actually belongs to the passenger and they had been driving for nearly an hour with their emergency brake on, hence the brake pads igniting into flame. The passenger then returns to pick up his friend and the two continue on their journey into the night. The employee said while there have been tons of fire alarms throughout his career, this was the first actual fire. Makes you wonder if those guys were inebriated to not notice their brake was on for that long.

Hotels’ Dirty Little Secret

Hotels’ Dirty Little Secret

Many hotel employees, former hotel employees and other hospitality workers take to the Whisper app to vent their issues with working in the industry as well as their secret actions behind working in hotel. One terrifying secret that has been repeatedly said is that housekeeping employees do not clean the sheets. Yikes! Some employees say they will freshen up the sheets with Febreze and straighten them out to make them look new but will not actually change them. Some have said that they use a lint roller to take off stray hairs without really cleaning the sheets. Others have said that while they will actually switch out sheets and towels for clean ones, the blankets are almost never cleaned. Gross! Perhaps, we should consider bringing our own bedding from now on.

Cleaning seems to be a major issue at hotels. The dirtier something is, the longer it takes to be clean, which in turn takes time and money away from the hotel. Some have confided that their hotel suggests merely wiping plates clean instead of actually washing them. Others have said that glasses are never cleaned in the guest’s rooms unless they are actually requested to be changed. No wonder some people prefer to have water bottles provided for them! This also sounds like it would be a major problem with the health department if they found out such practices were taking place. It definitely makes us think twice about using various amenities, might be better to bring your own stuff!

The “Waterfall”

The “Waterfall”

This next story comes through the eyes of the bouncer, who has tons of stories as you might imagine. Reddit user ChaosAlongThird, worked at a beach hotel surrounded by bars that are prime real estate for the young college crowd. Of course, this guy has seen it all before but unfortunately sometimes it can still catch him off guard. On this particular night a young couple walked into the parking lot of the hotel. Now, it’s typically policy to get them out of the hotel’s parking lot and to keep it moving. The couple happened to be incredibly intoxicated. This time, it became super clear that the girl was undressing and when it looks like something incident was about to happen, the bouncer yelled “What the [redacted] do you think you’re doing!?”

Walk Of Shame

Walk Of Shame

The young man in the couple attempted to get himself together and pulls up his pants, however the girl was much worse for wear. She was in between two cars when started relieving herself. As the poor bouncer put it, “This is a literal dove shampoo commercial waterfall; A consistency that must have been held for the last 4 days and nights.” She was also naked from the waist down, and a crowd has formed watching the entire situation unfold. The girl retrieved her clothes and the two had to walk away with their metaphorical tails between their legs, although it probably helped that they were super drunk.

Poo In The Pool

Poo In The Pool

One reddit user by the name of hospitalityqueen made it clear that working at a hotel is not all luxury and classy guests, it can also be quite an icky business. Some people let their children run rampant without paying them much mind. For example, if you have a toddler aged child and take them swimming, you have to put a swim diaper on them or you can expect for their regular diaper to explode and fall off. Unfortunately for hospitalityqueen, one hotel guest did just this which ended up getting a horrible mess in the pool, if you can imagine. The guest subsequently blamed the mess on the employee! Can you imagine?! Moral of the story is please watch your kids!

Explosion Misunderstanding

Explosion Misunderstanding

This is a cute little story that took place on July 4th and comes from Reddit user Catona. Near this employee’s hotel there is an ongoing Independence Day celebration which includes a constant barrage of fireworks with a larger show at night. As the fireworks really got going that evening, a Chinese woman visiting the hotel ventured to the front desk to voice her concerns. She was clearly very alarmed and said, “There is explosions!!!” The employee then attempted to reassure the woman that it was just for an American holiday. However, the lady was still quite frightened and insisted, “Explosions! It is dangerous! What do we do? Is there protection?!”

Eventually the woman left and went back to her room. She soon reappeared, this time with her husband in tow. He too was alarmed by the situation and said, “This is VERY bad! We must go! There is danger! We did not know there was danger here!” The employee again reassured them and said, “It’s a celebration”. It was then that the husband understood and turned to his wife to explain in their native language of Chinese. The employee could see the relief spread across the woman’s face who then excitedly asked, “Can we have explosions too?” Apparently, they love such celebrations but had no idea what was going on and were terrified they were caught in the middle of terrorism or some kind of violence. Thankfully, this cute story has a happy ending!

Remote Trouble

Remote Trouble

After reddit user Chazzos worked at a hotel where the owner decided to upgrade all of their TVs, some serious hilarious insanity ensued. It turned out that the owner didn’t look into the frequencies that might be disturbed by such a purchase. Particularly, they didn’t look into the frequency of the remotes. One night an elderly lady came to the front desk ranting about the hotel being haunted. She claimed that her AC was going up and down and the TV was changing channels by itself. It turns out that remotes had the same frequency as the AC units. The employee attempted to tell the woman that it was the room next to her interfering with her room, however the older woman was totally convinced of a ghost. She ended up leaving at three in the morning, while screaming “This place is haunted!” and driving away into the night. That poor woman!

Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb

Some employees complain that it seems as though guests don’t exactly know what the “do not disturb sign” is for. If the sign is on the door, employees are told to definitely not disturb the guests. This includes no housekeeping! Sometimes guests are annoyed that their room as not been cleaned yet they keep the sign on the door. Although, in a totally creepy turn of things, sometimes people will use these signs in a much more sinister way. More than one person has murdered another individual and left them inside a hotel room and then placed the “do not disturb” sign on the door in order to thwart the body being found and thus giving the murderer more time to escape. Disturbing!

Do Not Disturb Murder

Do Not Disturb Murder

One such story occurred in Ireland in 2014, after a man murdered his ex-girlfriend, Sonia Blount, and placed the do not disturb sign on the door. Eric Locke, of Dublin, tricked his ex-girlfriend with a fake Facebook account and lured her to a hotel. She agreed to meet the fake man, apparently for casual sex. Eric convinced her to leave a key card at the front desk for him. When he arrived, he said she was shocked but claimed that the two had consensual sex. He said he wanted to tie her to a chair and force her to listen “to his pain” and brought restraints which completely freaked out Sonia. At this point, she began screaming and Eric reacted by killing her. He then dressed her body and placed a Do Not Disturb sign on the door. In court they showed footage of Eric dropping his phone into a drain and running from the scene. He was later found guilty and sentenced to jail.

Orlando Bloom Gets Employee Fired

Orlando Bloom Gets Employee Fired

In May of 2017, Orlando Bloom was staying at the Chiltern Firehouse, a hotel in London’s West End. He was coming off a recent break up with popstar Katy Perry, and was obviously looking to drown is sorrows. Het met a waitress who worked at the hotel bar. Soon one thing led to another and the two met after work for a “drink”. They ended up sleeping together in the same hotel where she worked. The woman, Viviana Ross, also happened to be an aspiring actress (because of course she is). After the two shared a drink, she ended up spending the night. The story didn’t end there, however.

Fraternizing With A Guest

Fraternizing With A Guest

The next morning, Orlando left for a meeting while the waitress remained in bed. Unfortunately, hotel managers came up to check the room when they found her — their employee — lounging around in a guest’s bed. She was subsequently fired for “fraternizing with guests”. Orlando was reportedly attempting to get in touch with her to apologize about costing her the job. Hopefully, he used a few of his connections as a well-established actor to get her a gig in the job she really wants – acting. It doesn’t seem as though their dalliance was anything more than a one-night stand and Viviana has reportedly said she does not regret the tryst. Seeing as Orlando is considered a heartthrob, who wouldn’t have jumped at the chance?!

The Guest From Hell

The Guest From Hell

According to the majority of employees who have worked in a hospitality for a decent amount of time, you eventually run into a guest from hell. The guy from this story just might take the cake. To begin with he first came to the reddit user TheKaskae’s hotel from another sister property located in the same town. He proceeds to refer to the employees from the other hotel as a whole slew of profane words. Soon, he begins to brag about his six-figure salary and how this particular hotel is sub-par for his tastes. Joy. Shortly thereafter more and more stories begin to come out from various staff members about how horrible this particular guest is to deal with. He is apparently quite rude to breakfast staff, and subsequently files complaints after they refuse to re-open just for him. He then berates other guests who speak another language. He also complains about money in spite of his bragging about a huge salary. Ultimately, his behavior is so bad that the general manager of the hotel ends up having a meeting with him, during which he cries after she informs him if he continues his behavior he will be banned from the property.

Getting Rid Of The Pest

Getting Rid Of The Pest

Ultimately, he begins trying to hit on another female guest and drunkenly says that she “is the woman of his dreams” and begins crying to front desk staff. He then asks the employee to call him the next time his “dream woman” checks in. After the employee tells him that is definitely against the hotel policy the guest from hell responds that he will go behind the front desk and beat up the employee. The employee decided to forgo calling the cops because of the drunkenness of the employee, and the guy ends up going back to his room to sleep it off. The guest from hell later claims that he believes the bartender has been poisoning him with visine and threatens to beat him up. The stay ultimately culminated with a call from the general manager to the guest’s boss, which revealed some interesting information. Apparently, the guest was simply a temp at the company and the boss was paying for his room. His poor unknowing boss was extremely apologetic for his temp’s atrocious behavior and he immediately brought him back to the state he was originally from. The hotel employee is also pretty sure the guest from hell ended up losing his job back home.
