Sometimes monogamy is not the way to go and no one knows that better than Hollywood. Check out what Will Smith, Megan Fox, Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow and the rest of the hottest celebs have to say on cheating, open marriages, and what has ended their relationships. Some have proven that this agreement may keep the relationship strong, while others have subsequently crumbled. You’ll even read Angelina Jolie’s suspicion about what finally ended her long-term marriage to Brad Pitt.
Mo’Nique and Sidney Hicks
Mo’Nique wants it all and that includes an open marriage with husband Sidney Hicks. Knowing each other since the tenth grade, the couple respects and trusts one another enough to embrace the freedom of an open marriage that has lasted over a decade now.
To Mo’Nique, trust and honesty are above all most important and she really doesn’t see it possible to fall out of love with Hicks as their bond transcends any physical connection that could be lingering beyond the gray line that is their marriage.
Tilda Swinton and John Byrne
Notorious The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ice queen actress Tilda Swinton has never been one to envelop her liking toward open marriage, and her boyfriend agrees. Swinton has been with long-time partner and father of her children John Byrne for years now but also finds solace in another man’s arms that is reportedly friends with Byrne, Sandro Kappo.
Quoted in an interview with the Daily Mail, Swinton said “it’s all quite boring really. The father of my children and I are good friends and I’m now in a very happy other relationship. And we’re all really good friends. It’s a very happy situation. Life doesn’t have to be complicated. You just have to have compassion with yourself and stop blaming yourself when things do get complicated.”
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith
As the textbook couple for open marriages, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith have been vividly open about the contents of their honest and trusting marriage. When Pinkett-Smith went on record stating that “Will is his own man” and that she is just his partner in life, it was clear that Will dabbled in the occasional outside fling.
However, after realizing the one-way picture she painted for the press, she issued a Facebook post statement claiming that they both “can do whatever they want” and referred to the relationship not as an open marriage, but a “grown” one. Considering the two are both successful, talented and attractive, we’re curious how often external competition arises in the marriage.
Shirley MacLaine and Steve Parker
For such an early period, it was almost unheard of for couples to have open marriages but Shirley and Steve were ahead of their time in many ways. With Parker stationed in Tokyo while MacLaine lit up the Hollywood nights on screen, the two would spend time together minimally traveling and enjoyed being best friends before anything else.
In an interview with People, MacLaine opened up about their arrangement, although the couple split in 1982. Still referring to Steve as the “love of her life,” Shirley simply stated “No one understood it, we did. He lived in Japan basically, I lived in America working, and this and that. We’d meet up, always great friends, traveled sometimes together.”
Dolly Parton and Carl Thomas Dean
Although country star Parton and Dean’s 50-plus year marriage has managed to stay afloat it seems more like open infidelity rather than an open marriage. Stating that she would not want to know if Carl cheated on her and vice versa, it doesn’t seem entirely convincing that the two have been honest with each other over the years.
However, after discussing with the Independent the details of their open arrangement in 2007, she was quoted telling Oprah that “we let each other be who we are and what we are, but I’d kill him if I knew he was with somebody and he’d kill me.” Make up your mind, Dolly.
Ethan Hawke and Ryan Shawhughes
While still in a relationship with Uma Thurman, actor Ethan Hawke started dating his now-wife Ryan; so being monogamous is clearly not on his list of priorities. Claiming that sexual fidelity “can’t be the whole thing you hang your relationship on,” Hawke feels strongly about his open arrangement with Ryan. “If you really love somebody you want them to grow, but you don’t get to define how that happens. They do,” he told Mr. Porter.
Seeing human beings as sexual and primal through instinct, Hawke doesn’t believe much in the concept of monogamy as he related sexual infidelity to the inevitably of our hair turning gray, in the same interview. With no comment from Ryan however, we’re hoping she is on board with sharing her man.
T-Pain and Amber Najm
Together since 2003, the world famous rapper and his wife share an affinity for women that they like to experiment with together. Amber is known to be one to share her man in the bedroom apparently, but nothing is perfect in such an open arrangement as T-Pain has admitted to an affair in the past.
Claiming recently to be completely devoted to the mother of his three children, the two agree that an outside party can only be welcomed in their dual presence and it has seemingly spiced up their happy marriage over the years. Talk about being open, can you imagine such a situation?
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green
The insanely attractive Hollywood couple has been known to bend the rules of their marriage, but Fox is reportedly the spouse that seems to stray. Go figure, as one of the most beautiful and sought-after women in the world, she likes to say yes to opportunities with other men. Toward the beginning of their relationship, Green permitted Fox’s curiosity so long as she was honest and upfront, but lately, the arrangement seems to be less cloudy between the two after the birth of their sons.
To complicate matters further, Megan admitted that the stress of having young children wasn’t helping their relationship stay on solid ground, telling the Daily Mirror in 2012, “Two weeks ago I said to Brian, ‘We have to get a night nurse or we’re going to get a divorce…Because somebody’s got to sleep in this house or we’re going to kill each other.” After filing for divorce in April of 2016, Fox announced she was pregnant once again with Green’s baby which initiated giving it another go, so we hope they can work it out this time around.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
As one of the sexy couples on the list, this open marriage actually comes as quite a shock, although it may no longer be the preferred method of love for the two. Reportedly, toward the beginning of Timberlake and Biel’s heated romance, the actors were open about being with other people (and who could blame them.)
For the few years that the marriage has lasted the couple was allegedly happy together, however, recent developments have shown that a divorce may be in the works. Apparently, Justin’s “openness” with other women has become too much to handle for Biel and she’s sick of it.
Rachael Ray and John Cusimano
On the more private side of the spectrum, Rachael Ray and husband John Cusimano have been exploring an open relationship for years. With reports showing Cusimano dating other women and being spotted at a notorious New York swingers club, the two clearly have a contract.
However, their families are not on board as Ray has publicly stated on her show that “their extended family gets hurt when there is talk like that.” Despite the clear evidence pointing to the couple’s lack of monogamy, they have yet to clearly state that they engage in an open relationship.
Newt Gingrich and Callista Gingrich
Georgia politician Newt Gingrich tried for years to convince wife Callista to engage in an open marriage with him, according to Callista herself. Although Newt now denies this to be true, he claims that he has been unfaithful throughout their marriage.
Considering Newt has infamously jumped from wife to wife, cheating on them all has been the only consistency that he seems to have provided over the years, which is probably why he thought he would be safer in an open marriage with a woman that served as a catalyst for his last divorce.
Pink and Carey Hart
When the rough-edged singer and professional motocross rider first got together, Pink agreed to an open marriage based on a “don’t ask, don’t tell policy.” Judging from Pink’s hard exterior developed over a lifetime of drugs, it is not that shocking that she would be open to sharing her man.
That was until Carey found a young, hot blonde that served as arm candy everywhere he went; Pink wasn’t so cool about it then. After splitting up for a bit, the couple reunited and worked things out for their daughter, Willow. They are reportedly happy, and have a closed marriage that fulfills them both.
Hugh Hefner and Crystal Hefner
Throughout his playboy role as the most successful bachelor in the world, Hugh has always been willing to share. With Kendra, Holly, and the rest of the bunnies, it’s clear that at his age Hugh cannot perform like he used to, so he has never been opposed to letting the beautiful bunnies do their thing.
Now married to 29-year-old bunny Crystal, Hugh has finally reached as far as the double digits go and there is no way he is satisfying her the way she needs. We can only assume Crystal attempts to remain as loyal as she can to her sugar daddy, but that can only go so far.
Larry King and Shawn Southwick
Well for Larry, the sixth time is a charm apparently as his current wife Shawn wants the same thing he does: an open marriage. With both parties in the relationship understanding the concept behind the marital freedom, it seems as though they are really making it work.
When one wants to sleep with someone else, they simply just tell each other and allow the act to take place. And judging from the looks of bombshell Shawn, she is most likely approached more often than Larry. This was all reported by King’s ex-wife Julie Alexander, who allegedly showed a hint of jealousy when claiming how happy the couple was in the open arrangement.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Despite having finally settled their contentious divorce, it was considered an “open secret” in Hollywood that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were in an open marriage. Quoted by Hollywood Life, Jolie stated “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship … It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterward. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.”
While the couple has since agreed to keep their divorce proceedings confidential, when she filed for divorce in September of 2016, Jolie stated through her attorney that it was “for the health of the family” causing many to speculate that the tumultuous relationship between Jolie and Pitt had begun to affect the couples six children.
Kim Kardashian and Nick Cannon
It was so long ago that people may not even remember the two of these celebs getting together but it did happen and didn’t last long due to Cannon’s requests. With the big house, babies and money to offer Kim, all Nick requested was the freedom to romp around with other ladies.
Simple right? Well, in an unfair twist, Kim was not allowed to be as free as Cannon, which really isn’t fair or reasonable. Needless to say, once Nick presented the terms the relationship didn’t last long, but, like we said, it still did happen.
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
From what started as a consensual three-way relationship with a masseuse the couple came across, turned into a stab in the back affair by Thicke and a divorce filing from Patton. The successful couple were even high school sweethearts and had been best friends since their teenage years.
Even worse, after Thicke confused the rules of the three-way, he was allegedly even caught cheating with a 23-year-old while Paula was in the room with them. While on while being interviewed on Hot 97, Thicke copped to his mistakes, saying, “There’s a long list…I changed, and I got a little too selfish, a little too greedy and little too full of myself”. We guess not even an entire album dedicated to getting Paula back could make her forget that Thicke got a little too greedy.
Chris Robinson and Kate Hudson
Wilder than her ex-husband and singer of the Black Crowes, Chris Robinson, actress spawn of Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson, reportedly wanted an open marriage. Ironically reports came directly from her mother and mother’s partner (famous actor Kurt Russell) who Kate refers to as “Pa.”
To be free to sleep with whatever celebrities she wanted, she decided to divorce Robinson although he is the father of one of her sons (Ryder) after six years. Since their divorce, Robinson has remarried and Hudson has been linked to several celebrities, but the two seem to co-parent Ryder in peace despite the ending of their marriage.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé
Although we would hope Beyoncé and Jay-Z are “crazy in love,” we are not so sure based on the whole elevator-Solange incident. Regardless of whatever sparked that attack, the couple is allegedly into swinging with other couples in the bedroom.
However, it seems as though Jay-Z took it too far and Bey is not happy about it in the least. But, she doesn’t seem to be doing anything about it as we saw her lifeless, still reaction while her sister attempted to beat up her husband on tape. What a fool though, he has the most successful and beautiful woman on the planet and he wants other people? Just such a mistake…
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale
Everyone in the world knows that these two split up by now and that Stefani has been linked to country superstar Blake Shelton. But, during their 17-year marriage, it comes as no surprise that Gavin tended to stray from the pack.
Apparently, toward the beginning of their relationship, Stefani was aware that Rossdale, lead singer of Bush, was involved with other woman and didn’t seem to have much of a problem with it. But, once he put a ring on that finger, Gwen wasn’t so open-minded, thus the inevitable end of their marriage that was splashed all over page six. In 2016 following the divorce, Stefani admitted to Glamour magazine how difficult the marriage had become, and what ultimately lead to the divorce, saying “I had to work really hard at marriage, all the time, like everybody, but ours was extra hard, when you add that we’re from different countries, both of us being in music, and celebrity”.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
The on-again-off-again relationship of the actress-artist couple is said to be what may have led them to have an open relationship. With Martin on the road with his band Coldplay, and Paltrow busy on set shooting films like Iron Man, the couple has spent plenty of time apart. In a 2013 interview, Paltrow opened up to Glamour UK about their relationship when they were still together, saying “I never say, ‘Where are you? You should be home by now.’ I never place demands on him because I think he’s a really talented man and he’s putting something good into the world.”
Following the divorce, Gwyneth elaborated on the reason behind the “conscious uncoupling” telling Marie Claire magazine in 2015 that “I really had the sense that I wasn’t allowed to have needs, and I had to prove my specialness or self-worth by doing all this stuff and taking care of everybody else”. In spite of this though, the couple has managed to remain friendly, with both Gwyneth and Chris admitting they’re much happier as friends.
Julia Louis Dreyfus and Brad Hall
With a swingin’ reputation since the two former Saturday Night Live co-stars were in their blossoming youth, both comedians Julia Louis Dreyfus and Brad Hall have been experimenting within the bounds of their relationship. With 29 years of happy marriage under their belts, the two have never actually admitted openly to engaging in an open marriage.
One could argue that humor has gotten them through the tough times together, but we think there is a little more to it than laughing. Although the press is always curious what seems to have worked for the couple managing to overcome media obstacles, working together and raising a family, we can only assume it’s their healthy sexual appetite.
George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin
Although we would like to think that love is what brought this stunning Lebanese legislator into the arms of former Hollywood playboy and actor heart throb George Clooney, there is talk that something else may be keeping the gorgeous couple together. Rumored to have bridged the gap for the Lebanese government as a political ploy, Amal apparently doesn’t get to keep George all to herself.
According to a close source of the couple, their relationship can be described as “open and problematic at best.” Judging from the combined good looks between these two, they must have quite a few options outside the blurred lines of their marriage.
John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy
This couple should come as no shock considering the infamous affair that existed between former President John F. Kennedy and the insatiable Marilyn Monroe. Rumors of Jackie’s knowledge of the two never quite cleared over the years; some say that she was about to divorce John right before his assassination and others say that the two practiced an open marriage that allowed Kennedy to get frisky with the iconic and beautiful movie star and others.
Married, what seemed to be happily, for almost exactly a decade before the tragedy occurred, many people in the public believed that the couple had arranged an open marriage for the President’s straying eye. But, we can never truly be sure.
Corey Feldman and Susie Sprague
You may recognize this familiar face from Goonies as childhood actor Corey Feldman, but this aging actor has a lot more to hide than hidden treasure. With now ex-wife Susie Sprague, Feldman and his former bride practiced open marriage from 2002 to 2009 swinging from couple to couple publicly.
Sprague even opened up about the details of the marriage saying that the pair “agreed that whatever relationship they had would be open.” Feldman was even exposed to host orgies for him and Susie in his biography Coreyography, but left detail out in public due to family privacy and considerations. Wonder what ended up contributing to the downfall of their marriage, hmm..
Magic Johnson and Earlitha Kelly
When the marriage between basketball legend and athlete Magic Johnson and long-time girlfriend Earlitha “Cookie” Kelly was announced just two weeks after Johnson exposed his ongoing battle with AIDS, the press was shocked. However, after learning that the two had been engaging in open marriage practices for years, the root of Magic’s contraction from a third party made quite a bit of sense.
Even though it originally seemed to be contracted through infidelity, Johnson’s wandering eye that resulted in the disease was allegedly rumored to be less scandalous than we anticipated. Although we’re not sure if they still practice this type of marital system to this day, it is clear that Johnson was on a looser leash than we thought at the time.
Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley
Although the two British actors seemed to have split over Grant’s infamous prostitute scandal back in the 90s, the divorce was actually a byproduct of embarrassment rather than shocking infidelity. Having approached the ideals of marriage with loose expectations for years, the couple was reportedly open to straying; although it seemed as though Grant was the only one pursuing his wandering eye.
After 13 years of open marriage, the shame that came over their bond due to the heavy scandal, outweighed their love for one another and eventually they called it quits. Apparently, Hurley could not condone a prostitute being the one to keep her man warm at night, and we don’t blame her.
Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt
It seems as though open marriage has been a somewhat presidential pattern in the past with Franklin and Eleanor being no stranger to the arrangement apparently. 32 years of making the country better, four different election wins and a solid victory in World War II made Franklin one of the greatest presidents of all time, but he also was infamously known for the love of his mistress, Lucy Mercer.
The couple had an agreement so binding that Eleanor even let her man be with Lucy in exchange for continuing to contribute to the political responsibility of being First Lady. It would appear that the pair had one of the most famous open marriages in U.S. history.
Ludacris and Eudoxie Mbouguiengue
Apparently there have been two women to capture the heart of young and famous rapper Ludacris: his current wife and Gabonese model Eudoxie and his former girlfriend Tamika Fuller. After a cheating scandal broke out in 2013 that exposed the talent’s affair with ex-girlfriend Tamika in the form of a child, the world was shocked to see Eudoxie so amicable about the situation as she stood by her man’s side.
Shortly after the incident, the couple’s birth announcement arrived which continued to shock the world even further. But, we now know the real truth behind a situation so forgiving; clearly it was not a surprise to Eudoxie, so why should it be to us?
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
Although the High School Musical couple didn’t make it to the end of the road together, it really isn’t all that shocking that the two kept loose tabs on one another. They may not exactly count as an open marriage per say, but the couple makes the list considering how outward they were about their possible future together.
Apparently Hudgens once revealed that Zac did not want to get married until he was 40 years old, but would request the ability to sleep with other women. Even worse, Efron made it clear that Vanessa would not have the same option during the marriage, so that was an easy choice for her to say goodbye.
David Beckham and Victoria Beckham
With a face like that, it must make it hard on Victoria to remain calm when women worldwide throw themselves at her man. But, creating an open marriage and actually being objective toward his wandering eye might ease the pain, right?
Well, maybe in Victoria’s case where her husband has easily been named one of the sexiest men on the planet, it helps to reduce the jealousy that Posh Spice is not fond of feeling. Apparently, after Beckham’s infamous 2007 cheating scandal with Irma Nici, again in 2010 with his personal assistant Rebecca Loos, the couple has chosen to channel the “infidelity” toward a happier and healthier marriage.
Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton
These two might as well be the poster children for open marriage, so you should not be surprised to see them make the list. After the world famous Monica Lewinsky scandal, it was apparent that Hilary was not going anywhere, but that didn’t stop the world from wondering why.
Now, seeing her face all over the 2016 Presidential campaign with Bill still by her side, it was clear from day one that she wasn’t going to let her husband’s wandering eye hinder her inevitable future in office. Although Bill came clean to America about the affair, we didn’t really ever see much distaste in Hilary’s expressions leading us to be curious about how closed their marriage really has been throughout the years.
Josh Duhamel and Fergie
With another stripper scandal in the books, handsome actor Josh Duhamel went a bit too public with the couple’s open relations just before they tied the knot in 2009. Seeing as how Fergie had no objection with continuing marital planning whatsoever, and even reported that she never considered calling the wedding off, it was clear that Duhamel was only dancing along the muddied lines of their agreement.
After we saw them renew their vows on their first wedding anniversary and have since welcomed son Axl into the world, the specifics behind their relationship are a bit unclear. Guess we will find out..
Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick
Again, not necessarily a marriage, but terms of a pending future together were discussed in ways that relate this article tenfold. Anyone that tunes into the E! Network television segment featuring a public-obsessed, life-in-the-fast-lane family that we call the Kardashians, knows the troubled mind of Scott Disick and the demons he seems to struggle with.
If the couple’s past aired trials were to function as any kind of testament to what their marriage would be like, Kourtney would not be happy; hence her decision to call it quits with Disick in 2015. Ironically however, the couple has recently been reported to try again so hopefully Scott’s interests in outside parties have ceased.
Kobe Bryant and Vanessa Bryant
Nobody thinks the name Kobe Bryant without subconsciously tying his infamous alleged rape case to it; it’s just ingrained in there, right? But, after engaging in appropriate and consensual acts with the Colorado hotel employee, Bryant’s former dancer wife of two years, Vanessa Laine, stood closely by his side.
Eventually Vanessa’s embarrassment came to the light of the press, but it wasn’t for the reasons we would expect. She claimed to have felt ashamed for Kobe’s affair exposure and legal battle, rather than the fact that the two practiced an open marriage. With priorities like this, it is clear that these two have a premeditated and “honest” relationship.
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott
With what started as an unpredictable and erratic open relationship toward the beginning of their famous marriage, has apparently matured and changed after having children. The Beverly Hills 90210 star and daughter of Aaron Spelling, has always made noise when it comes to her relationships.
And considering she was married to Dean before her divorce to Charlie Shanian was even finalized, it is not shocking to hear that these two were open with one another in regards to their sensual fulfillment. Even since the “maturing” of their vow exchange, Dean has been caught in compromising situations that may hint toward the couple’s original agreement.
LeBron and Savannah James
Marrying his high school sweetheart Savannah, James made an honest woman out her in September of 2013. However, that did not necessarily mean that she made an honest man out of James. Just like the typical professional basketball lifestyle, James reportedly engaged in an open marriage with Savannah due to the fast paced, travel-prone, groupie-obsessed way of life he was leading.
Just months after the pair made it official, James was caught “cheating” at the White House of all places even while he was with Savannah. The two have courteously remained silent about their arrangement to stay out of the press, but as the biggest name is modern day NBA history, LeBron probably has to beat the groupies away with a stick.
David Boreanaz and Jaime Bergman
Once landing a Playboy playmate like Jaime Bergman, even for studly actor David Boreanaz, the rules have to change, right? But, apparently not even a Playmate of the Month can pull the reigns on this wild cowboy considering he was caught with a mistress in 2009 and who could forget his infamous affair with Rachel Uchitel?
Luckily for the “open-minded” actor, he bagged Bergman who was decently familiar with sharing her “man” with other girls, aka Hugh Hefner. Jaime didn’t even leave him when she was pregnant with their child amidst his mistress texting drama, come on. Who else is going to stick by your side, David?
Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker
Despite the loyal personality of HBO’s Sex In The City character Carrie fought so hard to build, apparently Sarah Jessica Parker does not share in the same ideals in her marriage with actor Matthew Broderick.
With “affairs” coming from Broderick’s side with random women in the press that almost contributed to the demolition of the 19-year marriage, it does seem that the arrangement could be a bit of a one-way street. However, sources close to the couple reported that both parties are allowed to engage in outside affairs as long as they stay under the vicious Hollywood radar.
Snoop Dogg and Shante Taylor
High school sweethearts Snoop Dogg and Shante Taylor have led quite a roller coaster romance over the years. With infidelity sparking on Snoop’s end in 2004, a divorce seemed to be the perfect action for Taylor to take, until they surprised us all in 2008 when they remarried.
Sources close to the couple claim that Shante knew about the many affairs, including Snoop’s time as a professional pimp from 2003-2004. Going beyond the saying “love is blind,” love apparently turns its head when you’re a professional womanizer too. Fortunately, it worked out for Taylor as Snoop has stayed out of the pap’s radar with cheating scandals for years now.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
As one of our favorite couples on the list, actress Nicole Kidman and country singing sensation Keith Urban have really turned some heads over the years. In more ways than you would think though, the two reportedly value the openness and honesty in their marriage and really seem to genuinely love one another.
While on tour Urban was allegedly spending a lot of time with up and coming country singer Kelsea Ballerini and despite Kidman’s need to be close to her man, she was reportedly okay with the singer doing his thing and trusted him to make his own decisions. After 10 years together and several obstacles they have overcome together, we are definitely rooting for Urban and Kidman to make it work for their daughters.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
The always amazing Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson came under fire after what appeared to be a squeaky clean marriage of 28 years. Rita’s release of “Forgiving Me, Forgiving You” shook apart the perfect facade they had built over the years. Claiming that she had done things for which she was sorry just as he had, the ballad pointed toward the hopeful direction of returning to the people they used to be in their youth.
But, the lyrics did not go unheard and rocked the press with the momentum of Beyonce’s indirect exposure of Jay’s hurtful affairs in Lemonade. Even Hanks owned up to Extra in 2016 saying that what they were doing to each other was “insulting and kind of foul.” On a positive note, the couple seems to have worked through years of alleged infidelity and appear to have come out stronger than ever.
Hanks and Wilson have since said they were “trying to do right” by each other. Open marriage? It sounds more like this couple just hit a rocky patch and went on their own paths for a while.
Jane Fonda and Roger Vadim
Actress Jane Fonda was unwittingly in an open marriage with her first husband, French film director Roger Vadim. After admitting to having extra-marital affairs, Vadim suggested to Fonda that she “should try having adventures of her own to enjoy ‘sex for its own sake,'” according to Daily Mail.
“Suddenly, her beloved husband – with whom she was trying to conceive a baby – was asking her to be his sexual accomplice. But she felt she had no choice. For all his faults, he gave her much-needed emotional security. So, again, she said nothing… The couple continued having threesomes throughout most of their marriage.”
Marlene Dietrich and Rudolf Sieber
Legendary German actress Marlene Dietrich was known to continually reinvent herself, which is why she was able to maintain a prolific and successful Hollywood career. She was rumored to be a secret lesbian, just one of several in Hollywood– a group of women she referred to as the “sewing circle.”
According to Wikipedia, Dietrich was married to assistant director Rudolf Sieber, with whom she had one daughter. “Throughout her career,” the page says, “Dietrich had an unending string of affairs, some short-lived, some lasting decades; they often overlapped and were almost all known to her husband.” It seems he didn’t mind so much about her lifestyle.
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell
Like her daughter that’s on this list, actress Goldie Hawn is reportedly in an open relationship with her partner of over 30 years, actor Kurt Russell. A source tells Closer Weekly that Hawn embraces the arrangement that she and Russell are in: “Goldie’s thoughts are that if you want to keep your man for decades, like she has, you give them space to be men, which includes being with other women.”
The sources says that this is why the two have never married but managed to stay in a loving and lasting relationship. Hawn herself has been quoted as saying, “A lasting relationship isn’t about marriage, it’s about compatibility and communication.”
Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee
When actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee got married, they apparently knew that couples can’t entirely be committed to each other for the rest of their lives. In their joint autobiography, With Ossie and Ruby, they’ve expressed that they have experimented with an open marriage.
They wrote, “It occurred to us, from observation and reasoning, that extramarital sex was not what really destroyed marriages, but rather the lies and deception that invariably accompanied it–that was the culprit. So we decided to give ourselves permission to sleep with other partners if we wished–as long as what we did was honest as well as private…”
Denholm and Susan Elliott
You might have seen actor Denholm Elliott in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but little did people know, Elliott was a self-professed bisexual. After a short marriage and affairs with men, Elliott married actress and writer Susan Robinson, with whom he had an open marriage for 30 years.
“Denholm Elliott never inhibited Susan’s own affairs (‘as long as you don’t fall in love and as long as you don’t have anyone else’s baby’), mainly because… it made him feel less guilty about his own indiscretions,” according to a report by The Telegraph.
Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester
Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester were notable actors throughout the early eras of Hollywood, having starred together in films like Tales of Manhattan and The Big Clock. Laughton was particularly known for his incredible ability as a character actor, but little did many know, he was a closeted gay man.
Laughton and Lanchester were married in 1929 and stayed together until Laughton’s death, but throughout their relationship, they never had children and many say that this was due to Laughton’s secret sexual preference. Lanchester herself was rumored to have lesbian tendencies, so it might be safe to assume that they both let each other indulge in their desires with an open marriage.
Margaret Cho and Al Ridenour
Comedian Margaret Cho and her artist husband Al Ridenour may have divorced in 2014, but before that they were married for 11 years. Cho, who is openly bisexual, has also been very candid about her open marriage with Ridenour in the past.
In an interview on the talk show The Real, Cho said, “I’m married to a man but I’m bisexual so I like both… We got together because… we both have this [idea]. ‘I don’t want to have [intimacy] with the same person my whole life. That’s just gross.” She also mentioned at the time that they have a big enough house to where the other person would have a lover over while the other was home!
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
In 2011, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher announced their divorce amid rumors of Ashton Kutcher’s infidelity. Despite his inclination to be unfaithful, sources say that Kutcher isn’t entirely to blame, since the couple dabbled in an open marriage!
A source told Star magazine that “Demi is attracted to women just as much as men, so she didn’t always get all she needed from Ashton… Everyone in Hollywood knows about their arrangement, but they’ve managed to keep it a secret from the general public. She was cool with Ashton having flirtatious relationships too. Somehow they made it work all these years. Both of them were respectful of each other. It was a lot of fun for them.”
American business magnate and investor Warren Buffett was sort of in an open marriage himself. In 1952, he married Susan Thompson, with whom he had three children. But in 1977, Susan decided to move out of the house, leaving Warren behind. After Susan left, Warren began a relationship and moved in with Astrid Menks, who became his longtime companion.
The three were apparently good friends and quite close during this time. Although he lived with Astrid the rest of his life, Warren remained married to Susan until her death in 2004. After her death, Warren and Astrid finally tied the knot.
Andrei and Masha Kirilenko
Andrei Kirilenko is a retired NBA player who was born in Russia. Kirilenko played for the Utah Jazz for almost ten years. He is married to a Russian pop singer named Masha Lopatova, who is known as MaLo. Back in 2013, MaLo apparently told the Salt Lake Tribune that she allows her husband to stray once a year.
She said, “What’s forbidden is always desirable. And athletes, particularly men, are susceptible to all the things the are offered.” She also told ESPN, “Male athletes in this country are extremely attractive. They get chased by women. It’s hard to resist. It’s the way men are by nature. When I’m aware and I let him do it, it’s not cheating.”
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade
Actress Gabrielle Union has been suspected of having an open marriage with her NBA star husband Dwyane Wade, but this might just be caused by the cheating allegations that Wade has faced.
It seems that Wade would be keen on having an open marriage, as he seemingly admitted to cheating on his Instagram, when he posted a picture of Union with the caption, “My Life mistakes gave me you and my life mistakes almost made me lose you.” Union, who is nine years his senior, has publicly expressed that she and Wade have a prenuptial agreement due to the fact that she is her own star and she is not one to rely on anyone else for her wealth and fame.
Aussie actress Caitlin Stasey has been a fixture of the Australian soap opera Neighbours and is currently on the CW series Reign. She is currently in a relationship with actor Lucas Neff from Raising Hope, with whom she says, “I am in a somewhat open relationship with the love of my life. We are not polyamorous but do not limit ourselves physically.”
Stasey has publicly admitted that she is a lesbian, taking to her website to say, “I know it troubles people for me to refer to myself as a lesbian considering I have a male partner. I’ve known I was mostly gay ever since I can remember… I’m happier being fluid. I’m happier being honest.”
Mr. Worldwide is known to advocate for an open relationship as well. According to Men’s Fitness, the “Cuban artist lives by the words Ojos que no ven, corazon que no siente, which loosely translates to ‘What they eyes don’t see, the heart doesn’t feel.’ I’m not going to be worried about what she does when I’m not around. I think men are more [expletive] than women. They let their ego and insecurities come into play.”
Pitbull has been in a relationship for nine years and says the open relationship works both ways. When his partner’s friends always tell her that he was out with other women, she says, “‘Yeah, I know, he told me.’ Other people’s bullshit doesn’t affect us. We talk about everything.”
Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran
In 2012, word got out that Chris Brown and his then-girlfriend model Karrueche Tran were in an open relationship. Brown and Tran had been dating for four years following Brown’s infamous arrest for domestic battery against his former girlfriend Rihanna.
But after Brown and Rihanna have begun hanging out again as friends, this raised some eyebrows among the hip hop community. But a source told Radar Online that “Karrueche isn’t stupid, and she has told friends that they have an open relationship. She never asks him about Rihanna, ever… She doesn’t pressure or hound Chris, it’s just not what she is about.”
Alan Cumming and Grant Shaffer
Actor Alan Cumming confused and probably outraged a few people when he married a man but admitted that he was bisexual.
The celebrated performer married graphic artist Grant Shaffer, but although Cumming claims they don’t have an open marriage, he says he doesn’t believe in monogamy: “What I do believe is that monogamy is not a natural state, and it is not something we are conditioned to do as animals. So in my own life, I realized it’s not possible, and I don’t pretend I can do it. And also if you are kind and you are honest and you are faithful in a true way, then it is not the worst thing that could happen—that you have a little something on the side.”
Jude Law and Sadie Frost
British actor Jude Law may be another celebrity prone to an open marriage. In the late ’90s, actress Sadie Frost met heartthrob Jude and even left her husband for him. The couple married in 1997 and had three children, but eventually split up by the early 2000s.
Then, Law began to date model Sienna Miller and the two almost married, if not for the fact that Miller caught Law cheating on her with his children’s nanny. After his split from Miller, Law reconciled with the mother of his children, Frost, and the two have reportedly “rebuilt their relationship after a very nasty split, and over time he’s proved to her that she and the kids will always be number one in his life.”
Toya and Mickey Wright
Toya Wright was formerly the wife of rapper Lil Wayne, but aside from that, gained notoriety as a reality television star. In 2011, she married entrepreneur Mickey Wright and apparently the two had difficulty with their marriage.
They appeared on Bravo’s Untying The Knot, in which the couple revealed that Toya had given her husband an eight-day “hall pass” in the past, which meant that he was able to do whatever he wanted, with whomever he wanted, for that amount of time. Despite the effort to save the marriage, it was revealed that Toya didn’t have the same privileges she gave her almost-ex-husband.
Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer
Author Neil Gaiman, who wrote Coraline, and his musician wife Amanda Palmer are publicly open about their unconventional open marriage. Gaiman told The Guardian that “We would not allow another relationship to imperil what we have.”
Palmer has expressed on her blog, “For the record, I actually know quite a few people (artists and otherwise) who are in open relationships, but don’t go around broadcasting it. Neither do we. I don’t really hang with the poly community or go on ‘open marriage’ pride marches.” Palmer even told out.com, “Our relationship is open, and the open-ness is grounded in a total honesty with one another. We’re very communicative with each other and we share everything. I think that’s the way you gotta do it.”
Misha Collins and Victoria Vantoch
Supernatural actor Misha Collins and his author wife Victoria Vantoch have been under suspicion of dabbling in the benefits of an open marriage. It turns out, that Vantoch has written The Threesome Handbook: A Practical Guide to Sleeping with Three in which the book describes Vantoch as a “sexuality historian and threesome dabbler.”
Considering his wife has written an entire book on sharing your love with more than one person at once, it’s easy to assume that she would have needed the experience to back up her writing. Apparently, the book talks about how Collins and Vantoch went from fantasizing about a threesome to getting involved in a full-fledged triad relationship!
Amelia Earhart and George Putnam
Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart was apparently ahead of her time in the early 20th Century because she sent a “prenuptial” letter to her fiancé, book publisher George Putnam. Earhart allegedly couldn’t be bothered by a true, formal marriage that was normal of the times.
In her letter, Earhart wrote, “On our life together I want you to understand I shall not hold you to any medieval code of faithfulness to me nor shall I consider myself bound to you similarly. If we can be honest I think the difficulties which arise may best be avoided should you or I become interested deeply (or in passing) in anyone else.”
Wendy Williams and Kevin Hunter
Talk show host Wendy Williams might unknowingly be in an open relationship at the moment with her husband-slash-manager Kevin Hunter. Back in the late ’90s, Hunter was caught cheating just after the birth of their now-teenaged son! However, it seems that Williams didn’t seem to mind as much since she is still with Hunter today.
She has said that she never would have thought she would stick with someone after they cheated on her, but she has seemed to let that go: “The best advice that I can give is that if you’re the one who was cheated on, whether you decide to stay or leave, forgive and forget either way.”
William Moulton Marston
He might not be a household name, but Mr. Marston is the creator of Wonder Woman, who he based off of the two women that he lived with. Marston married psychologist Elizabeth Holloway, with whom he conducted a lot of experiments as Marston was a psychologist himself.
Through his studies and work at Tufts University, Marston observed women and was able to develop the Wonder Woman comic. While at Tufts, he took a liking to a student named Olive Byrne, who moved in with him and his wife. According to The New Yorker, “they lived as a threesome, ‘with love making for all,’ as Holloway later said.” Both Byrne and Holloway gave birth to two children, who all grew up with the three of them as parents.
Robert Crumb and Aline Kominsky-Crumb
Robert and Aline Crumb are both popular among the underground comics crowd, with Robert being particularly popular for his cartoons Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. According to a 2007 article by the New York Times, the two “have long had an open marriage.”
While Robert takes a trip to Oregon once a year “to rekindle a relationship with an old girlfriend,” Aline has taken on a new companion she considers a “second husband.” Of the arrangement, Robert has said of Aline’s partner, “Between the two of us, we kind of make an ideal husband, because he can do all the masculine things I can’t do.”
Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre
Pioneers in the existentialist philosophy, Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre became somewhat of an intellectual power couple at the height of their popularity. At the time, Beauvoir was at the center of controversy for her alleged seduction of female students and subsequently passing them on to Sartre. As a result, she was no longer allowed to teach in France. But it seems that she and Sartre had an open relationship.
According to The Guardian, “There was Sartre’s important dictum of ‘transparency’ – the vow that they would never lie to each other the way married couples did… It was he who engaged in countless affairs, to which she responded on only a few occasions with longer-lasting passions of her own.”
Pablo Picasso was infamous for having multiple women throughout his time, even going so far as to tell one mistress, “Women are machines for suffering. For me, there are only two kinds of women; goddesses and doormats.”
Although he was known to go through a slew of women in the early 20th century, in 1915, Picasso married Olga Khokhlova, a Russian dancer, but shortly after began an affair with a 17-year-old Marie Walter, with whom he fathered a child. Knowing that Picasso was a womanizer in his day, this should have come as no surprise to his wife and we’re sure that she may have retaliated in the same way.
Cindy Margolis and Guy Starkman
Cindy Margolis is a Glamour spokesmodel and actress who in 1999, made the Guinness Book of World Records for being the “most downloaded” person on the Internet. In 1998, she married Guy Starkman, a restaurateur, but there were rumors swirling around that they only married to have children.
Due to fertility issues, Cindy had a hard time conceiving but they eventually had one son and twin daughters before separating in 2008. Sources say that both Cindy and Guy slept around with other people throughout their marriage. This is perhaps as a result of Cindy’s difficulties with conceiving.
Bob Crane was known for his role on Hogan’s Heroes, but the comedic actor held a deep hidden secret. He was actually addicted to a certain intimate act. The actor married twice but was known to seduce other women and film them in compromising situations.
Mark Dawson was the son of Crane’s co-star Richard Dawson, and revealed that Crane shared his secret with him when he was just 17. In an interview with ABC News, Dawson recalled, “The first 10 or 15 minutes, it was very interesting. Unnerving. I gotta tell you: it was a little shocking to see Colonel Hogan au naturel.” It would come as no surprise if Crane’s wives knew about this the whole time.
Famed American diplomat and political scientist Henry Kissinger was apparently quite the swinger back in his heyday. Even though he has long been married to his second wife Nancy Maginnes, he was quite a ladies man back in the 1970s.
Known as “Washinton’s greatest swinger,” he says, “That’s no compliment. That’s faint praise,” in an interview with Women’s Wear Daily. Sources close to Kissinger say that “Henry likes to believe that although he’s a serious Germanic scholar, he’s really a frivolous playboy, that he’s Metternich, the Papillion, light, gay and 18th Century.” And it seems that other worldly politicians have followed in his footsteps…
François Hollande is the current president of France and two years after earning the title, found himself in media headlines as the subject of a complicated love triangle. He was previously in a relationship Segolene Royal, a French Socialist who ran for president in 2007, but lost to Nicolas Sarkozy.
After losing that election, Royal and Hollande split, but he suspiciously confirmed a new partnership with a journalist named Valerie Trierweiler. This was only a short six months after the split from Royal, which led many to believe he had been cheating. But that’s not the worst part…
A Love Triangle
Fast forward to 2014, when a French gossip magazine published allegations that Hollande was in a years-long affair with French actress Julie Gayet. When asked about the affair, Hollande did not deny it. Meanwhile, Hollande remained with his new partner, Trierweiler, who found herself with her foot in her mouth when she tweeted support for Segolene Royal’s opponent after Hollande had just appointed Royal to the post of energy and environment minister.
Considering the proximity with which Hollande’s partnerships ended and began, the fact that he never married, and the fact that he didn’t deny the affair, one can assume that Hollande and his ladies are well aware of the open relationship that they were in.
There is one family in America that has become famous for their incredibly open marriage situation and that is the Brown family from TLC’s Sister Wives. The reality television series premiered in September 2010 and documents the life of Kody Brown, the patriarch of a polygamist family, his four wives and their 18 children.
The family has agreed to do the show in an effort to normalize polygamist families and raise awareness about their reality in society. While the series led the family to be investigated for prosecution, Kody Brown insists that their arrangement is legal because he is legally only married to one woman, while his marriages to the other three are considered spiritual unions.
Kody Brown is an advertising salesman who lived with his family in Utah, but recently moved the clan over to Las Vegas in 2011. Many viewers were left to wonder how Brown supports his family and their four separate households off of one income.
At the start of the series, he and two of his wives had jobs, but the family probably mostly makes their income from the show these days. In an excerpt from their book, Becoming Sister Wives, Brown admits: “To be honest, I’m not sure if any one of my wives could fulfill all my needs, nor do I believe that I am fulfilling all of theirs.” He says that each wife contributes a special talent to the family.
Kody says that with his first wife Meri, “the world is structured and organized, her house is peaceful and in order.” Kody and Meri met back in 1989 when she was just 19 years old. Of their relationship, Meri has said that just two months after meeting, Kody proposed to her.
They married on April 21, 1990, and together had one daughter, Mariah. In a January 2017 episode of Sister Wives, Mariah came out to her father and four mothers, revealing that she was a lesbian. While the family’s Morman fundamentals look down upon homosexuality, Mariah’s parents have been supportive of her, with Kody saying, “We’re not happy that Mariah’s gay, we’re happy that she knows herself.”
Kody’s second wife is Janelle, who he met through his first wife Meri. Of meeting Kody, Janelle has said, “When he walked into the room I looked at him and had that feeling of remembering something I had forgotten. It was a singular experience. It didn’t occur to me when I met Kody to think of him in any other way than as Meri’s fiance… Over the next few years I would see them occasionally. Eventually, Kody and I became as good of friends as Meri and I were.”
Kody married Janelle on January 20, 1993 and together they had six children. Their eldest daughter Madison, who is the third oldest in the group, is expected to have the first Brown grandchild in May of 2017.
While Janelle “can talk business” with Kody, he appreciates third wife Christine for “the lightness of being together.” Christine has said, “Kody and I met through my sister in the summer of 1990 after I got out of high school. Kody and Meri were her chaperones on a youth wilderness trek.”
Soon Christine and Kody became close and eventually she shared that she had feelings for him, adding “Kody officially asked about me on Valentine’s Day of 1994. That weekend he came to town with Janelle and we went out on our first date and he proposed.” Kody and Christine were married March 25, 1994 and together they have six kids.
Robyn was the last wife to enter the Brown family after 16 years. She had just went through a difficult divorce in a monogamous relationship through which she already had three kids. Knowing she didn’t want to be in a relationship, she still got close to Kody and his family and said, “it took months for me to be convinced that it was right. I was making sure this time that I had found my soulmate.”
Kody legally divorced his first wife Meri in 2014 and subsequently legally married Robyn so that he could adopt her three children. After they married, they had two kids together. Kody admitted that “When Robyn came into the family, she brought about an emotional honestly that required me to start dealing with things I avoided.”
Terisa Greenan is an actress and director who is probably most known for creating a web series called “Family: the web series,” which is loosely based on her real life in a polyamorous relationship. Greenan is an advocate for the polyamory lifestyle and has spoken on many public platforms in regards to the issue.
Greenan herself lives a polyamorous lifestyle with her two partners Scott and Larry, with whom she has lived since 2000. Greenan and her family believe in “ethical monogamy,” according to an article in Newsweek, which can be defined as “engaging in loving, intimate relationships with more than one person–based upon the knowledge and consent of everyone involved.”
Cameron Diaz, Maybe
Bombshell actress Cameron Diaz might be someone who is open to open marriages or relationships herself. After filming The Other Woman, which is heavily based on fidelity, Diaz was asked about the possibility of staying with one person, which she says isn’t realistic.
According to Mirror, Diaz has said, “For some reason, we get into relationships and we expect one man to understand all the parts of us and meet all of those needs. I think that’s where everything fails.” When asked if having lots of partners was a bad idea, Diaz has said, “Why not? Why would that be so bad?”
