More likely than not, you’ve been a passenger on a plane. Back in the 1950s, the privilege was only for the rich, and if the average Joe was lucky enough to fly on a plane, they were sure to dress to the nines. Today airline culture has changed quite a bit, with almost everyone having access to travel. Check out these crazy things flight attendants had to deal with while in the air.
People do gross things in public every day. We all have driven past that guy who is vigorously picking his nose. However, that has an added realm of personal space because he or she is in their own car. Doing something that should be done in the comfort of your own space should not be done while flying on a plane!
A flight attendant recalls a time when a lady decided that she wanted to give herself a pedicure and whipped out the “ped egg” and started using it on her feet. Not only did she start using it but “then tried to dump her foot shavings in my trash,” said the flight attendant.
Yes, it is true that flights are difficult due to the small, confined spaces we all have to deal with. Usually, when you are on a plane and there are open seats available, you can ask a flight attendant if you can move to give yourself more space. But there are some seats that passengers are not allowed to take under any circumstance.
One time, a passenger was waiting for the bathroom so he decided to sit down on the back galley flight attendant jump seat. As a reminder, you are not allowed to sit in that seat so that is one issue but what happened next is shocking. “A flight attendant told him he couldn’t sit there,” said another passenger. “After I came out of the lav and sat down, we realized that he had urinated on the jump seat!”
A Little Laundry
Sometimes when you fly, you will have to endure a very lengthy flight (or several flights) depending on where your travels are taking you. And when you are on these lengthy flights, you typically wear the same clothes for a long time. Travelling doesn’t make anyone look very pretty or put together…
On one rare occasion, a passenger decided to do something about the filth that was accumulating. Too bad there are not any washers and dryers for extended flights because the flight that this passenger was on could have benefited greatly from it. A flight attendant recalls a first class passenger who took off his soggy socks and decided to dry them by putting them over the air vent above his seat. The smell was traveled all the way to the back of the plane!
Did Someone Lose Something?
And speaking of laundry, there are are a few items you don’t ever want to deal with on a plane. Yes, your underwear should remain on at all times ( the only exception is in the event that you are joining the mile high club.) There is one flight attendant who was able to recall a passenger who thought underwear was optional.
One of the last things you want to find as a flight attendant is what you are about to read next. “I was helping clean the plane at one of our out-stations so we could turn the plane on time and found a pair of bloody panties,” said the flight attendant. “This is why we wear gloves.”
Adult diapers are a reality some people have to face and it’s not something that anyone should be ashamed of. But if you are someone who uses adult diapers and you ditch them on a plane, in the most unsanitary way, you will probably get some dirty looks. Dirty looks for dirty behavior!
A flight attendant shared an experience of an unfortunate Depends diaper debacle. Someone shed their used Depends adult diapers on the toilet seat— shed like a creature shedding its outer shell – and they were left perfectly wide open and obviously used on top of the toilet lid just waiting for someone to find them.
We all have to go “number two” so let’s not get all embarrassed and act like it doesn’t happen. Number two is a fact of life. And many people have to have a bowel movement while they are flying on an airplane – that is just another fact of life! But that doesn’t excuse this one passenger from their bad bathroom behavior.
On this flight, a passenger used the tissue (out of the tissue box dispenser in the restroom) to clean up after their bowel movement. They then placed the used tissues back into the tissue box with all of the clean tissues. A fellow flight attendant reached into the tissue dispenser for a tissue and discovered the disgusting mess!
Most people who travel don’t want to eat airline food. Some don’t mind it but the idea of where the food came from, how long it has been on the plane, and what kind of preservatives it contains makes some people feel sick. But there are some people who take this idea of eating on the plane to a whole new level.
One of the strangest things flight attendants recalled witnessing were people who made food, like soup, using the airplane water. Sure, you may just wash your hands in the bathroom with it but guys, the water lines haven’t ever been cleaned — ever! Don’t consume the water! The thought of it is stomach churning.
Most people who travel with pets either have companion animals or they are moving to a new home that requires pets to fly to their destination. Now, this is incredibly strange and very peculiar. Could you image leaving your pet on the plane or at the airport? Hard to imagine, isn’t it? But it has happened.
Unfortunately, animals account for several of the more unusual items on the list of things that have been left on planes, including a falcon, dried fish, a frog, a tortoise, and a parrot. People, if you are flying with your animals or your pets, don’t forget to take them with you!
Fighting For Her Right To Pump
A mom has to do what a mom has to do – and being on an airplane is no exception. Recently, a mother flying from New York to Oakland had to pump for her son but things got a bit complicated.
“It’s a six-hour flight, so I had expected I would pump once or twice,” Molly Guy told ABC News after she landed. “I was sitting next to an elderly couple and didn’t want to pump in my seat, so I asked one of the attendants if I could pump in the back area of the plane where [the crew] gather. He told me, ‘for the comfortability of other passengers could you go in the bathroom, I think it’s best to go in the bathroom,’” Guy recalled. “Have you ever tried hand expressing eight ounces of breast milk crouched in an airplane bathroom with a line of passengers outside the door?” she later posted on Facebook.
It probably isn’t that big of a surprise that “strange requests” has made the list. At one time or another, you are bound to come across some unusual people, and this is especially true when you are a flight attendant because you are definitely going to meet all kinds of people from all over the world.
And there have been some very strange requests. Some items requested include a slender pen to clean ears with; a screwdriver “to take the seat apart;” tweezers for pulling thorns out of a passenger’s butt; and a cup, lid, straw, and permission to put heels in the overhead space. No one should inquire about making a homemade airline catheter!
There is such a thing called “Ambien zombies” and flight attendants hope you never have to experience them for yourself. Ambien is a sleep aid and people are pretty liberal about their dosage during long flights. These folks are sleeping, which means they think they are at home and safe in their beds.
Some even think it is perfectly acceptable to take off all of their clothes. From streaking down the aisle totally nude to falling over like a plank of wood, when passengers consume an unfortunate mix of Ambien and airplane cocktails, it makes even the most normal people do very bizarre things.
This situation is very strange and it is even more strange because more than one flight attendant has had to deal with this uncomfortable situation. We all know that there are people out there who love cats and those cats become like family but even this is just too much for us to imagine.
Could you imagine having to tell a woman that she can’t breastfeed her cat!? You read that right: Breastfeeding. A. Cat. And this isn’t an isolated incident – apparently, cat-feeders’ response is always the same: “I’m just feeding my ‘baby.'” Not okay, that is just wrong.
Flying in an airplane sucks because you can’t move around much. You can get up from your seat and maybe meander down the aisle to the lavatory but that is about it. You have nowhere to go and that can cause many people to go a little stir crazy and create their own “routines.”
Some flight attendants have recalled witnessing some passengers performing workout routines. How they think they have space to do this, we have no idea, but once again this brings up the argument that there is a time and a place for everything. Doing your daily workout should be done before or after your flight but not during.
We all get impatient on planes. Honestly, the impatience usually begins when you arrive at the airport. Once you check in, you have to get through the security line and then you are in line to board the plane. And you are waiting to get thru the flight so you can slowly exit the plane. Every part of your flight experience is slow.
But in 2014, a passenger on a China Eastern Airlines plane said he wanted to “get off the plane quicker”so he took it upon himself to deploy the emergency slide to exit the plane at the Phoenix International Airport.Yeah, this is never a good idea. The incident cost the airline about $16,000 in damages and caused an additional two-hour delay.
Boogers and Blankets
A flight attendant recalls an incident that occurred when they were still required to offer passengers blankets during long flights – the blankets aren’t passed out anymore and this situation may be one of the many reasons why attendants are no longer required to give out blankets. It’s safe to say if you ever get offered an airline blanket again, you will refuse to take it after reading this.
One flight, a passenger had to call a flight attendant immediately. The passenger was not in any danger but if she were a germaphobe, she would have been in a terrible position. She handed the flight attendant her blanket and asked for a new one. “I was puzzled since everyone had started the flight with a fresh blanket, said the flight attendant. “I looked down at the blanket and it was all wet and slimy with boogers. I felt so grossed out—like I was going to hurl.”
One pilot recalls this delightful traveler (can you sense the sarcasm?) Many people who take a plane are traveling for business and are not the most pleasant to be around. They are also people who act like they can’t be bothered with things like airline safety regulations. Looks like they don’t plan on trying to survive in case of an emergency.
Anyway, many pilots are former United States servicemen and women and take respect very seriously. One pilot explains how a passenger told one of the flight attendants to “Flip off” when she informed him it was time to end his phone call because the plane was departing. The pilot heard about the incident and told the passenger he had to leave the plane.
Turn-Off the Game
Do you remember hearing about Alec Baldwin and the Words with Friends incident? There are some people who get so engrossed in their game, they completely refuse to disconnect, even when they are on a flight and it is required of them. Many flight attendants deal with this ongoing issue.
Whether they refuse to turn off their phones or their games for take-off and landing, some passengers act worse than children! In this case, a crying baby or a toddler throwing a tantrum is probably the least of your worries. If you have to deal with an unruly adult, you are sure to have your hands full.
Keep Your Shoes On!
We have talked about people getting way too comfortable on planes, like taking their clothes off and doing incredibly strange things while they sleep, but this is something else that is just all too common. Passengers who decide to take off their shoes and make themselves at home on their flight happens too often.
First of all, a plane is like a flying bus – people are constantly in and out and everyone is in close quarters. And if you stink, or your feet smell, you should really consider those who are stuck around you. They can’t move away from you so why do you insist on torturing them with you horrible smelling feet? Plus, the floors are dirty! Don’t be gross!
Dragged Off Of United!
This is by far one of the most ridiculous situations to have happened on a plane in recent years. This man was taken off the plane because United needed to free up some seats for their crew. No one nudged at the promise of $800 to get off so four passengers were chosen at random. The man was a 69-year-old Chinese man who claimed he was being profiled.
Many questions were asked such as why this man? or how come they didn’t just offer more money? Well, according to regulations, “carriers can negotiate with their passengers for mutually acceptable compensation,” so it sounds like because they didn’t want to offer more, they ended up costing themselves more in the long run.
This Time The Attendant Gets Crazy!
A flight attendant wasn’t having it anymore! When a passenger stood up when he was not supposed to, the attendant got into a conversation with him and that conversation quickly escalated. One thing led to another and Steven Slater ended up on the intercom.
Slater said a ton of curse words at the passengers followed by grabbing a beer and activating the emergency slide as he used it to exit the plane! Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, “it’s a strange way to quit, let’s put it that way.” “I don’t think he’ll be able to come back.” It seems not only the passengers do wild things!
Dripping Breast Milk
A flight attendant recalls another strange breast milk incident. Now, if you are a traveling mother, you do everything you can to accommodate your infant who may be traveling with you. Travelling is not only hard on a new mother, but it is also very hard for the baby who has to deal with the flight, too.
However, there was a time when breast milk made for quite a scene on the plane. When passengers notified a flight attendant of something dripping onto their heads, the flight attendant went over to check it out when she heard, “oh my gosh, my breast milk! It’s not frozen anymore and it’s leaking what should I do?”
If you are a seasoned flier, you know that some flights drag on and seem to take forever. Whether you are in the air for an hour or several hours, the flight can feel like it’s never going to end. Many travelers plan ahead and bring things onto the plane that helps pass the time. Snacks help, too.
Keeping on the topic of snacks, one passenger took it too far and a flight attendant saw the whole thing. We understand that getting hungry happens but staying sanitary should be a priority when around a slew of people you have never met before. One thing we don’t advise is picking food up with your feet! “A first class passenger picked something off his bare feet and ate it,” said the flight attendant. “I saw it myself.”
